Need some ideas for a new handgun

I have two handguns and that is it Glock 26 and a Glock 42.
I sold the Canik since it proved to be more of a liability then it was worth having.Need some ideas what gun to get next since I carry the 26 mainly and the 42 is just a back up gun if going through sketchy area. I am thinking about a Glock 21 or 22 for home defense maybe since I have ammo for both calibers in my inventory box.

You've got those two Glocks basically for concealed carry, so a larger size I would agree on. The Glock 21 is common, but Glock came out with a model 41 that's on the same frame as the 21, but has a longer slide and barrel matching the standard 1911's 5 inch barrel.

Not sure if that interests you, but figured I'd mention it. Also, going with the 41 over the 21 doesn't make it more difficult to carry.

Look at Glock 34 Gen 4! Nail at gnat at longer range, common round to your 26, will take up to the 33 rd Glock mags!

I like the idea but I dont see them as used in the gun stores I go to the 21 and 22 are always to be found used in the 400-480 range whereas those models will be close to $600. I am trying to be under $500 if at all possible.

The 21 ans 22 are both fine pistols! I have a 21SF and it is next to me right now along with a 30 close by!

Used Glock 21's sell for under $400 pretty regularly on gunbroker. Yes, you have to pay for shipping and ffl transfer, but you can get good deals on pistols that come with lots of goodies like extra mags, holsters, etc.

I'm also looking at used Glock 21's (gen doesn't matter) as they are generally cheaper than 30's.

G22 (police trade 3rd gen) would be a natural next step. Maybe with a 9mm conversion barrel and a couple of 9mm mags. Total cost ~$500

That sounds good ^^

Most Police trade in's tend to not have been fired that much, 9mm & .40 capability seems like a good idea. Mind you, I am 9mm all the the way.

Not sure if the majority of Police Trade in's have night sights? My Glock's all have TruGlo's (but I do not sell any) we do not shoot much any more, but in carrying a Glock 19 every day, I have no reason to believe it is not going to function, as advertised.

If you like Glocks, there are many good deals on 22's and 23's right now. I would look for a deeply discounted gen4 22, if I were you. I think $400-$450 is possible and they all are reliable generally even used.

I like Glocks but have you thought about trying something different since you already have a couple? If .45acp is an interest how about a 1911? Rock Island Amory is an excellent 1911 deal. For a .40 maybe a FNS, they can be had with night sights for $400.

I will consider S&W M&P 2.0 and Beretta 92G / Px4 as options.
I like 1911's but not as home defense guns because they can be finicky with certain ammo and may have a break in period that will cost me a good bit of ammo.

Hard to beat a Glock 21 if you can get your mitts around it. I require a Gen4 as even the SF was too big for me.

22s are great too if you like .40 s&w (I dont) and can be had for good deals as police trade ins right now. Im tempted occasionally eventhough I got out of .40.

Also, a fine option is the venerable Glock 17. Great shooter and your 26 can share mags.

Personally I have a 21 as my HD gun and carry either a 17 or 26, depending on dress

There are many 1911 pattern guns. Some are priced obviously with sales over functionality as a priority. My Colt and Dan Wessons were gtg right out of the box, unlike my Glock. I still put a couple 100 through before I count on them.

Hey Tibult, I forgot to ask. What was the issue with the Canik?

Edit: Nevermind, I just saw your Canik thread.

In reference to your 1911 reliability comment, I agree to a point. I picked up a Colt 1991 and the supplied mags are junk, I have had an unacceptable amount of FTF's with them. I picked up some Wilson Compact mags and they have fed 100% reliably.

Agreed, I currently have 5 1911s and had 12 or so at one point or another, only 1 was a problem out of the box, a Ruger that just needed to have the extractor loosened a bit (took 3 minutes). All my other ones have been 100% through many 1000s rounds.

Now, Im about to experiment with some hot 10mm loads with my RIA and wouldn't be surprised to have a few issues if I need a stronger spring (I probably do)

It had stove pipes and ftf with 115 gr FMJ it needed hot ammo to work reliably.
Had it fixed by Century after a 6 week wait and I decided to pass the savings to someone else to deal with after disclosing to the person the issues it had and that I had not test fired it upon receiving it.

I have a gen 3 21SF that has been with me since the literal day I could legally purchase a handgun. I buy and sell guns all the time trying to either upgrade or find something that better suits my needs. I've been through probably 15-20 different handguns in the last 5 years and the only 2 that seem to stick around are my Glock 21SF and 30SF. I carry the 30SF whenever I'm taking more than a quick trip to the gas station. If it's just to the corner and back I have a Pico or a 642 Airweight I slip into my pocket. But I will tell you this. I will most likely never get rid of either my 21 or 30. The 21 is a tank and is as much of a tack driver as anything else I've ever owned when I do my part and has been 100% reliable with the round count up to about 9,000. It is bone stock other than a set of steel sights (from Glock) I installed and a Streamlight i put on it.

I was the first "Civilian" firearms Instructor to teach Security to be able to apply
for Licenses to be armed in their job description, in Ontario Canada, ran my business for 25 years. Before me there were only Police Instructors working out of Community Colleges.

No use of holsters! Too dangerous, shot from bench in indoor ranges, start with .22 Revolvers, no speed loaders, only load with 5 rounds, safety you know, empty chamber under the hammer.

As I was getting out of it, sold to an Instructor I trained, Glock 9mm Pistols were coming in, then they changed to .40 Cal. Same as Police.

Since changing from Glock 17 to Glock 19, I have not seen anything to change my mind, G19 is the best gun fighting pistol in the World!
Now that I live in God's Country, and can carry every day, my opinion is cemented.

I am definitely leaning towards Glock again since it has proven itself to me in the last decade of owning different models. I am on the fence now with either a Glock 21 or getting a 17 for ammo interchangeability with 26.

Consider expanding your horizons beyond Glock. Glocks are fine of course, but there are so many designs out there that offer so much in terms of variety. Even trying different action types like a DA/SA.

Personally, I believe a good entry level 1911 (think Springfield Range Officer or Ruger SR1911) is mandatory in a handgun collection.
