Need Small Carry Gun

sub-compact/last-ditch carry guns(BUGs)...

I didnt read all the forum posts yet but in general, I'd opt for a NIB(brand new) .357magnum/.38spl +P 5-6 shot DA/DAO revolver over a semi-auto .380acp or 9x19mm.
Gunwriter, legal use of force expert & tactics trainer Massad Ayoob wrote a good article years ago about how a deep concealment firearm may get dirt/grit/lint etc in it. :(
Modern semi auto pistols are well made & there are great strides in carry rounds/pistol ammuntion but for serious carry, I'd get a Ruger LCR .357magnum, a S&W 638, a 442/642 J frame or a Taurus Total Ti Protector .38spl +P.

I'd add that several sub compact .380acp & 9mm pistols have been marketed as concealed carry & public gun sales increase nationwide but a lot of these .380acp semi-auto models jam or break.

In a real lethal force event, have a snub .357magnum or .38spl +P,.

mouse guns...

Ayoob also stated; "Friends dont let friends, carry mouse-guns." :D

A defense sidearm, big or small, revolver or semi auto should be loaded with modern, FACTORY made ammunition only.
Reloaded or hand-loads are fine for R&Ds or training but on the real streets, only carry factory made loads.

I rotate between a S&W Bodyguard in .38, Walther PPS 9mm, and just picked up a SA XDs in .45 ACP. If I had to get rid of 2 of them I would keep the Walther. Just my 2 cents worth. The S&W is really the wife's, she loves that little revolver.

I had a LCP .380 but traded it in on a nice used Colt Mustang. The LCP was painful to shoot, the Mustang is a pleasure to suit. I am much more accurate with the Mustang than I ever was with the LCP. The Mustang doesn't have any noticeable recoil. The LCP was very punishing for a small gun.

My EDC is a Kahr PM9, lightweight, totally at home in my pocket and in my hands shoots very well at SD distances. That said, if you prefer a revolver for whatever reason, I frequently carry a Smith 637, lightweight, as comfortable in my pocket as the Kahr and certainly up to the task of SD ... my only issue with revolvers is capacity; seven in the Kahr works better for me than five in the Smith ... I've been tempted by .380s, especially the 1911 pattern guns like the Colt ... but I'd rather be shooting a 9 than a .380, all things being equal ...

There is no doubt that 9mm is better than 380 but the BG380/LCP/P3ATs are really in a size class of their own. Ther are super tiny 9mms but recoil is pretty nasty in them compared to the 380. When it comes to a snub nosed revolver I really think the comparison has validity. The size advantage of a snub nose with 5 rounds of 38/357 is really nothing over a G26 or similar weapon and its much larger than the small 380s. If you can only have one gun a snub nosed 38 is really a really versatile weapon and is still a pretty good choice though.
