Need Shotgun And Ammo For Home

While salt rubbed into a would can burn and be painful, rock salt fired from a shotgun tends to vaporize rather quickly upon exiting the barrels and would NOT
be a viable choice.

While many jurisdictions, (including mine), allow for Castle Doctrine defense including the use of deadly force, the use of non-lethal force with a firearm can get you in trouble. The argument tends to go along the lines of, "if you didn't need to kill him ti save your life, you weren't justified in using a deadly weapon".

IF you must shoot someone, the adage is to shoot to kill. While modern forensics will eliminate the old "only one side of the story then", it is a choice to make when confronted with imminent threat of death or major harm

YMMV

Take a couple of yellow pages and shoot one with buck shot and one with bird shot (I used #8 as I was on a dove hunt) from 10 steps away.

Bird shot is mighty good

I'll cast a vote for the Mossberg 500. I got mine as a combo with two barrels, one 18 1/2" and one 28" vent rib barrel. Got mine at Big 5 Sporting Goods for $289 on sale. With the 2 barrels it is a very versitile gun, but if you don't plan to hunt in the future then you can always just set aside the longer barrel, or even sell it if you know you'll never want to use it.

I prefer the Mossberg due to the location of the safety and the location of the action release button. I think they are both easier and faster to operate.

I will cast a vote for the 870, and also the Benelli Supernova tactical.

Nice shotguns.

I have a Mossberg 930 SPX autoloader, loaded with #0 or #4 buckshot standing next to my headboard. I agree with GunsAreGood with regard to the racking sound, although the bolt closure on the autoloader is similar in sound. I'd rather have one in the pipe, ready and have a little more element of surprise. I live alone since my wife passed away so anyone who is in my house ain't welcome.
