Need Recommendations for .22LR $500

I have about $500 to spend on a .22 that I plan to use for plinking. I figure 50 yards would be my max distance. I'd like it to have iron sights but might add a scope later.

The action type isn't important to me neither is the cosmetics - could be wood, could be synthetic. What is important is accuracy, trigger pull and reliability.

Any suggestions on what would be the most gun for the money?

Most gun for the money is without a doubt the Savage Mk MKII. You can pick them up with the Accutrigger for less than half of your budgeted amount. Very accurate, very reliable.

Now, you can certainly buy more accurate rifles. You can buy prettier rifles. Etc. But when you are talking about best for the money you aren't going to beat that Savage.

I just bought a Henry Frontier lever action .22. Im very impressed with Henry. The gun is very accurate and of high quality, and you'll get it for just under 400. I've owned it a week now and have shot it every single day! I cant put the thing down. Lots of fun. Really accurate rifle too, and great looking.

I agree with Doyle,,,

But when you are talking about best for the money you aren't going to beat that Savage.

Their base model Mk-IIF is only $172.00 at buds.

I was recently told by a member here that the Mk-IIF has the same barrel as their higher end Mk-IIG.

Last year I purchased a Mk-IIF from Wal Mart for $147.00,,,
I didn't notice that it did not have the Acu Trigger,,,
But to tell the truth it's stock trigger is okay.

I put a $30.00 Simmons scope on it,,,
I'm hitting 12 gauge shells at 50 yards.

Another inexpensive rifle that is proving to be a fine shooter is the Mossberg 802 Plinkster,,,
Depending on the stock option you choose they run from $175.00 to $235.00.

These rifles (at least the two I know of) are very precise shooters.

You could also get a CZ of any ilk for a lot less than your budgeted $500.00,,,
I have a 452 trainer I bought new for $345.00 two years ago,,,
It has more accuracy than I can possibly use.

So pick out a rifle that makes you smile to hold,,,
Chances are anything in your price range will do the job nicely.

I guess my vote would be for the CZ because of the accuracy issue.

I think there are more 'fun' guns out there (I think semi-auto's are more fun.)

I've also heard really good things about the Savage Doyle mentioned but don't have any first hand experience with it.

I had good luck accuracy wise with a Remington 597 but it is NOT as accurate as the CZ.

Great suggestions, thank you. By accurate I mean keeping the shots in an area of the size of a rabbit head at a max of 50 yard

Are we talking new? If so, why not used too? That must surely widen the choice too or simply make the current options even cheaper to allow for scopes, and ammo.

(By the way, go CZ!! :D)

Remington 513T match shooter. It will have to be bought at a gun show or used, since they are no longer made, but worth the money.

I'd look for a nice Remington Model 504 (no longer made but still can be found new on some gun store shelves). Mine has proven to be a very accurate, nicely finished, affordable rifle in the "classic" style.

As said earlier....CZ will be more accurate than most...trigger is adjustable...and if you can find a CZ 453...they had single set triggers....

just bought the wife a CZ 455...it has the option of changing barrels...22/22mag/17...it was under the 500 budget....

Couple weeks ago whittakerguns had CZ 452 Americans for $369. Very very nice looking gun. Haven't shot mine yet but everyone says they are accurate.

Update: I handled a CZ 455 at my LGS and was impressed enough to buy it. Thank you for all the suggestions. does anyone know if CZ makes a similar styled rifle in center fire chamberings?

Savage magazine

Since the Savage was mentioned earlier, had anybody else had trouble with the MKII mags not feeding, especially the last round?

I've had a factory 5 rd returned as new back to the factory, a replacemant, the same issue. A factory 10 rd is not much better.

Ruger American is a lot of gun for the money.

There are guys up here that shoot small bore precision with Anschutz rifles.

They like to go down to the club and compete with each other informally with their Americans.

These rifles shoot very well and are reasonably priced. ($275 or so)

Once you're bit by the CZ bug, you'll never look to another gun. I have two of their rifles myself and do see a third and fourth in my future.... :)

My vote goes to a Marlin 39a. I got one about 10 years ago as my go-to .22 rifle and I have not been disappointed. A good receiver sight on top and you would be all set. Walnut and blue steel that should last a lifetime easily.

Although not quite on the same level, the Henry lever .22 isn't bad either and the entry level model should cost somewhat less. The price difference isn't as great nowadays as it used to be. I am intrigued by their Silver Boy model.
