i took my ccdw test the other day, i passed and outshot everyone there with my ruger service six, yes the same service six i at one time thought of trading or selling because of a little rust and a few tiny pits. not anymore as at 7yds double action 20rds tore a hole in the plyboard that my fist would go through. i was the only one there with a revolver, now to my question. i have a safariland 568 for my service six, and will use it till i get another gun, but now it seems i can get another gun in about two months. i want a revolver and a ruger if i can, what do ya'll suggest? the 357 lcr or the 357 sp101? mabe something else? i know it's two months but i like to plan ahead, thanks

Get the SP.

For a 357 it's a better choice. IMHO.

I carry a model 60 Smith and like the steel frame a lot.

If you like a six shooter ..... Ruger's sp101 can be had in a six-shooter if you can find one in .327 ...... smaller frame, lighter weight, same energy levels .....

I would go with the SP101. I personally think that it is plenty small enough to carry. The only way I would prefer the LCR is if I wanted to pocket carry.

SP101. Definitely. The LCR has a good trigger, but the SP101 is much more comfortable to shoot, at least to me. Plus, you have more than just the 2" snub option on the SP.

We told you so.

We. Told. You. So.

Unless you need something really small and light, as for pocketability, I'd go with the SP101.

Go with the SP101 3" barrel. You will be very pleased indeed. What it should do for you is give you peace of mind you made the right choice.

Personally I would go with the SP or even a Model 60 Smith like someone else said. To me the LCR just doesn't feel good in my hand. Just my preference.

Stick with 38 Special. The 357 was meant for a larger/heavier gun (like your Service Six or Security Six, minimum). "Liking the option of shooting 357" is a logical fallacy, when you hate the recoil and finger punishment from a small gun..

The .38 2 1/4" shoots like a dream

Small, but heavy. Recoil is easy. Wouldn't recommend for pocket carry though.

Rogervzv. Really like the SP with a 3 inch barrel! Might just havta get me one when I go for a .357. Anybody know what the closest equivalent in a Smith is?

I have and carry the Ruger SP101 with a 2.25" barrel chambered in .357 Magnum. I carry it with Speer Gold Dot 125gr GDHP. bullets The recoil is manageable but it can be a little beast with hotter loads. But it is a wonderful carry gun.

Yes, the three inch barrel, five shot, 357 Smith is the Model 60 Pro Series. I have one and the SP101 also. The S&W is far superior and also has adjustable sights. As far as looks go, the Ruger wins. Both are holster guns IMO.

The S&W Model 627would also be a good choice. I saw it last night at the range. It is a little bit heavier than the Ruger SP101 but it was a pleasure to shoot. It holds 8 rounds of .357 Magnum has a 2.63" barrel.

If you feel you need the 357, and don't mind the additional 12 or so ounces, that's a very noticable 3/4 of a pound, then that extra weight of the SP 101 will help tame the recoil.
For my one carry revolver I chose the 38 Spcl +P LCR. With modern +P ammo, particularly the Speer Gold Dot Short Barrel, I believe that I am well prepared for any self defence situation. In addition, at 13 ounces, or basically 1/2 the weight of the SP 101, it is much more comfortable to carry. In fact, nearly unnoticeable to carry. I'm not sure I could say that with over a pound and a half of stainless steel hanging on my belt.

A pound and a half (24 ounces) is nothing for carrying a gun. If that is a burden, maybe ones belt and pants crotch need to be hitched up to where they belong, never mind multicultural dress mode and underwear as public fashion. Nothing personal, just a rant, but we have a nation of youth that dress like they are retarded, with a complete lack of taste and good grooming. Then they expect to conceal an effective firearm.

Clearly, the SP101 is a [belt carry, at the waist, firmly cinched belt] kind of gun. So is any other 357 gun pretending to be appropriate for the caliber.
