Need for new 7.62 x 54r factory load

What we need is a new, x54r load from a mainline manufacturer, using a 150 gr spitzer or boattail with a game bullet point.

First to mind is Hornady, since they've bought into x39 in both 5.45 and 7.62. They make a .312 /150 sport bullet too, so they start is there. Import a steel case, put a good primer in it, pay attention to charge weight for accuracy, and plug that .312 slug in.

Those of us that shoot PSL's and the Mosin sniper guys would be grateful. Anybody got any pull with Hornady?????

Unless it is the same price as surplus it would be hard to sell it.

Those who want good stuff roll their own from the surplus.

I have used S&B 174gr. loaded with sierra matchkings to hunt with. I know you arent supposed to but this bullet did a very good job on a doe at almost 200yrds. I would not hesitate to hunt with it again.

I was told by the store manager of the sporting good store in Riverton (Wyoming) that Winchester and Remington are both producing soft point ammo now for the 7.62X54R. I have not seen any yet.
Anyone seen any?

I've shot some of the Winchester. It does pretty good.

The brass is reloadable, but the primer pockets were extremely tight.

I have used Winchester 180 grain soft points with excellent accuracy results.

Also be sure to take a look at www.doubletapammo.com -- they've got 7.62x54 loads using Nosler Accubonds. I will be using this ammo this hunting season. DoubleTap has always made top quality stuff so I doubt this is any different.

They do, I've shot the Winchester stuff and its pretty good. When I got my mosin I wanted to reload for it, (like all my rifles). I was going to by brass but all I could find was Norma which is about twice the price of the Winchester loaded stuff.

So I got 200 rounds and have been loading it (150 Sierra .311 bullets) with 44 grns of 4895, its mild and accurate.

Hornady does make match 7.62X54R for the CMP GSM Sniper Matches. I haven't seen it in stores nor have I tried it, but I'm told its pretty accurate.

I looked at the doubletap for hunting, but I don't have a 28/30 with a .308 barrel. Seemed pricey to purchase .308 Hornady for a .311 barrel in the hopes they might be accurate. I was sad.

Winchester is producing NEW ammo I have been picking up new Winchester brass on the range also Priv Partazan makes excelent ammo and it is reloadable, non corrosive, farly clean. Both options are expensive.
I use surpluss ammo cheep good and if you clean with hot water and soap the croosive salts flush out. and the barrel is clean.

Happiness is a belt fed weapon and lots of ammo.

Interesting Russian ammunition mathematics facts:

- 7.62 X 54mm Developed ~1891
- 7.62 X 39mm Developed ~1947
- 5.45 X 39mm Developed ~1974

7.62/54 = 5.45/x

x = 5.45*54/7.62

x = 39

therefore,

5.45 X 39mm = (7.62 X 54mm) * (0.715)

In other words, same ammo, different scale.

5.45 X 39mm with:

more than sufficient, as well as meat maximizing, for deer sized animals. . . .

Hope you'll be hunting Elk, Moose, or Bear. .

PSL

Lots of replys and looks guys, thanks.

I started the post 'cause I'm interested in factory ammo for a PSL. PSL's, Romak-3's, SSG etc are all "timed" for 150 gr slugs. The scoop is that heavier slugs will beat the rifle to pieces, eventually.

I load for the PSL and it likes what I feed it, but shagging what lately has become hard to find brass is a hassle. And the PSL is a brass monster, and beats empties into funky shapes.

The Privi ammo does not do well in my PSL. Who can afford Norma and Lapua? The new Win ammo is 180 gr RN, not a PSL load. I have bought some of the Win stuff and pulled the bullets and used the brass. I also got a box of Norma on the cheap, old ammo, been in the store for many moons.

Some of us are looking for more accuracy ( in some cases a lot more) accuracy than surplus ammo offers. Much of the really cheap x54r is heavy MG ball and not PSL ammo. I don't want to really fool with corrosive, and there is no game bullet surplus anyhow, all FMJ.

Again, a NEW x54R load, steel cased, for affordability, with a premium 150 gr BT or space tip bullet, and non corrosive. PSL guys will eat it up.

The best thing for your requirements would be a " Mexican Match " load. It is strange with the number of Mosin and psl owners , why few commercial loadings exist.

say what

Mexican match? I think I've heard this...........factory brass and primer but add powder and shooter choice of slug......yes or no?

Do tell what is Mex match?

kraig, what about this x54r match ammo, and I've never heard of the match either, CMP sniper match??

Mexican Match is simply pulling the bullet out and replacing with a better bullet. The power and primer isn't changed.

Regarding the Hornady Match. I haven't seen it for sale anywhere but its issued in the Vintage Rifle Sniper Matches at Perry, and the Eastern and Western Games.

As the Sniper Games become more popular (and they are) I'm sure Hornady will be producing more. I haven't contacted Hornady about the availability simply because I load all my ammo.

Here is the article about Hornady's Match Ammo from their web site.
