Need experienced opinons to spend $500

Go with the Ruger .22 and enjoy shooting with your SO! You can assemble the reloading tools and supplies for the Moisin a piece at a time. And learn whily you are at it.

Then, after well established shooting pleasure for both of you, when you have got your reloading act together, you can assemble low recoil fun rounds for the rifle and expand your pleasure.

I'd forget about trying to make the old Russian warhorse into a tack driver, if you've got her down to 2" thats already a wonderful thing! And you could spend several times what that rifle is worth trying to shrink that 2" down to 1", and maybe never make it!

The Mosin is not a good platform to waste money on accuracy, especially as reloadable brass is difficult to find.
Yeah, i have come up with lots of crazy terribly inefficient firearms related ideas over the years(my latest is buying a ROA and a conversion cylinder for 45 ACP instead of a dedicated hunting pistol), but reloading a Mosin doesn't make much sense to me.
Get the Mk III AND a Marlin 891 TS and hone your rifle shooting with that is my suggestion(I have a MK II and 891TS myself for practice). The 891 needs a william peep sight added to it($64) for it to be really great.

So, here's some updates....

We rented the mk. III in LA and shot it.
Also rented a glock 21, 9mm beretta, xd9, xd45, p226. Went with the SO, and several other friends.

result:
SO no longer like the .22 mkIII.
her #1 choice is now the p226 in .357 sig, then glock 21/xd45, hates beretta.

since p226 is over the budget, we decided that glock 21 is now IN.
WIN!

I thought a .45 full sized gun would scare her off completely, but I guess after shooting my bubba mosin, she became comfortable around recoil.

Also, I was about to start a 44 automag tread, until I found out how ridiculously expensive they are. Maybe after several years I'll be able to afford one for a safe queen. But then again, I'd rather spend the money for other ridiculous purchases like a deagle or a tacticool m1a ....

The reason the .44 Auto Mag is so expensive is that they are long out of production, and they were rare, complicated expenisve guns to begin with.

In 1974, a S&W M29 was $283.50 (msrp). An Auto Mag in the same shop was $395!

They are great looking, accurate, and mechanically tempermental beasts, and since there are no more being made, the price goes nowhere, but up. And I have 3 of them.:D

Also have a Desert Eagle (Deagle to you gamer kids), and an M1A (but only GI rack grade, you can keep your tacticool stuff).

Along with a lot of other toys. And some serious guns as well. Start out with one, then two, and wake up 35 years later with a bunch of cool stuff!:D

If you are going to the range much at all, lifetime cost of a 22lr is going to be tiny compared to a centerfire.
I often go to the range with a bulk box of 22lr(<$20) planning to shoot the whole thing. Sometimes I make it, sometimes I let someone else shoot it, and sometimes I take leftovers home. I can't do a decent set of drills with my EDC for $20.

I recommend you get at least one 22lr.
I am selling a lot of centerfires for 22 LRs now.
I never go to the range without one, even if I just want to site a rifle for hunting or something.

The other guns you mention are things you will enjoy greatly.

Man, all these suggestions...:)

I honestly am leaning toward the mk III now.
for range purposes and occasional small game, why not?

I guess I just need to save up more.

This year's acquisition then will be mk.III, Glock21, and a 10mm conversion barrell for das glock.

These, and a shortened bubba Mosin should serve all my purposes from range plinking to home defense to outdoor hiking/camping/hunting this coming Summer. I agree completely with $20 walmart brick for a whole day's worth of plinking.... as of now, I spend $50 in average per trip.

Im just joking w/ the .50 cal deagle....the .44 Automag is the classiest handcannon coming out of my hometown. I hope I stumble upon a senile owner one day..... It's still and always will be THE gun lusted by me and the lady.

I believe the Ruger MK X series is usually recommended because it was the best 22 auto for anywhere close to the money for a very long time. I own a MK II and love it, but I don't think it holds the lead in the price range it once did. The NEO, Buckmark, and several others that are cheaper or about the same in price are real close. If you don;t like the MK III for some reason take a look at some of the other.
If you want it for target shooting you want a longer sight radius which means longer barrel.
