Need experienced opinons to spend $500

A. Reloading equipment and supplies for my 7.62x54R in an attempt to get 1" MOA shooting my tinkered sleeper mosin 91/30.

-OR-

B. Ruger mk III 22/45 bullbarell and varieties of cartridges, so I can learn and practice shooting, hoping to get into competitive matches in the future. Perk to opt B is my significant other get to go shooting WITH me a lot more often

I am only a year old in terms of shooting a rifle. Got the mosin last year because of wikipedia's Simo Hayha and BIG 5's sale. Learn to DYI everything while maintaining original aesthetics and managed to reduce 1 foot by 1 foot MOA to 2" in about a year. I shoot once a month.

I know this is like comparing apples-to-hamburgers...but regardless of my silly noob question,
opinion anyone?

The decision is already tilting on the ruger just because of that:rolleyes: my sig other also likes pinging steel 300 yrd away. Although I know she can't be loving the recoil that much.

The Mosin is not a good platform to waste money on accuracy, especially as reloadable brass is difficult to find.

I'd much rather spend the $500 on a CMP Garand, but that's just me...as I have one.

I also started with a Ruger 22/45 bull barrel. Skip it. I grew tired of it after a couple months after getting my CZ 9mm.

I'd suggest working on the Ruger out of those two options.

I might also suggest if you don't own a handgun, that would be another great shooting area to explore.

Thank you. I wanted to reload for the sake of the learning. I thought by having 400 reloadable mosin brass is okay.
But I also know that other platform such as 30-06 has a lot more variety and supplies...

The ruger mkIII was a mutual choice between my and the lady, considering:
a. no recoil
b. cheap ammo
c. she likes the looks.

a. & b. can only be voided if the gun is a .44 automag, (another odd one we both "agreed" upon) which I have no idea where to find.
I think I'll start another posting elsewhere about this handgun.

But thank you, I do not own a handgun yet, because I thought they are harder to master as opposed to rifles & shotguns.

In my opinion, your choice is clear. Get the MK III that you both like and go shooting together. This is a basic and has cheap ammo, and she can shoot it too. Later on you can pick up a rifle without cutting her out of going shooting with you. (which she probably wont do if you buy a big rifle).

Going shooting together with your girl is very rewarding and over time increases the bond between us through the team spirit that showed up in her after we started shooting together regularly. Buy her whatever gun she wants first and just shoot hers until you get yours. :D

Ruger mk III 22/45 bull barell. and lots of ammo.

I just bought a 22/45 and it became my wife before we got out of the store.

The Ruger but I'd go with a standard-griped slab sided target and then get a trigger job.

You will always gravitate to .22 throughout your shooting sports activity career...

Enjoy, you crazy kids, and be safe!

That would be my choice as having a live in shooting partner is a wonderful thing.

I think you’d have more fun with the .22.

As other have mentioned the .22 cost is lower and you’ll probably shoot more. If you shoot at a range that has a club or league competition I’d take a look at joining it. I had a LOT of fun, learned a lot, and really improved my shooting by competing in a league where each week my scores got posted.

Are you okay if your wife scores higher than you? My experience is that ladies who shoot listen more to advice, use it, and then shoot better than most of the guys.

PS. You might also try this: Buy the Ruger because ‘it’s something for BOTH of you’ and get the reloading equipment later because you were so selfless with the first choice.

Seems like everyone's been there done that! Words from the wise!
Turner's got their weekly sales and a $270 ruger mkiii--- would be hard not to go:D

I have a Mark II and definitely recommend the heavy barrel. I would like to buy a 22/45, but other purchases keep getting in the way. The most recent one was a Ruger LCR-22.

Buy a pair of Rugers,,,

If your lady likes shooting,,,
Jump on that wagon with both feet.

That 22/45 is an excellent choice,,,
Very accurate pistol right out of the box.

So buy two of them and have fun at the range with your lady.

get 2?
Here in CA, we need to wait 30 days for a second handgun purchase.....and there's only one of us with a HSC...unless she also has a HSC, then .... wait. I just answered my own dillema!

I agree with Flapjack23...buy more guns!! We were looking at a 9mm or .40 cal. then priced the .22 conversions priced at another gun so we decided on a 22/45 for cheap practice. It is a great fun gun to shoot. I would recommend the 6 7/8" slab side if comp shooting is a goal, it will be my next purchase, we got the 5.5" extremely accurate at 50' but for comp 6.88" is the trick. The Rugers are challenging the first couple of field strips, a little practice and break in and they tear down quite easy. They cycle any .22 LR you give them none of this oh it only likes the good $$$ stuff. Back to Flapjack23's reply I was able to get two guns instead of just one!!
