Need another 45

I am set on getting another 45. I currently have only 1, a Colt Government Model 1911 and the trigger is too light to use as a home defense gun. The rest of my guns are 9mm. I am thinking of getting an M&P45 or a Sig 220. Some people would say no contest get the Sig. I have a Sig 226 and I find that I don't shoot the DA/SA guns quite so well as DAO's. In fact I shoot my Walther PPQ better than my Sig 226. I pretty much had it narrowed down to those 2 but now, I thought, if I am going to spend the money on a Sig 220, I might as well consider an HK as well. I love my Walther PPQ but Walther doesn't ,make a 45. The HK looks a lot like a Walther (but for more $$$). What are your thoughts about the HK 45 vs the other 2 I have mentioned.

220 DAK? I haven't shot one but am intrigued by the idea. But I suspect if I ever get a .45 it would be a P320 or G21.

I thought I wanted a G21 until I shot one yesterday. Now it's M&P, Sig 220 or HK. I would probably have to order a DAK. Most SIG dealers only carry DA/SA

M&P or SR45. They are both great guns.

Can't recommend any of the HK's, sig's, Walthers, etc.... Never have owned one as there is more to pistols than price tags and names. God Bless

If a carry gun is in order you may want to look at the M&P compact. Very easy to shoot & reliable, with lots of aftermarket parts avail. Ergonomics in line with 1911s & CZs.

Well you mention increased difficulty with the DA/SA pull, which is a problem I have and many others have. I have personally moved toward "one trigger pull" guns for defense.

In this sense, the HK DA pulls tend to be shorter and thus easier than the standard SIG DA pulls, DAK aside. I do note that SIG has shorter triggers available to install. HK also may still have some models with their version of the lighter DAK pull, I think they call it the LEM trigger. If you can find an HK USP compact in .45 that will have a shorter reach and will generally be a handier gun. It should handle the recoil fine--my .40 handles it no problem.

With both the HK and SIG you are paying a large premium (@$400) over the Smith, and I would make sure that you think it's worth the difference. I would say not. The only problem I noticed with the M & P in .40 is that the grip tang would dig into the web of my hand a bit on recoil. You should try to rent one of the M & Ps in .40 or .45 to see if this is an issue for you.

Not sure why you would not consider Springfield XDs or XDms. My next .45 will likely be one of these.

I owns SIGs including the P220, HKs including the HK45, and the Walther PPQ.

Both the P220 and HK45 are terrific pistols and my very top favorites DA/SA .45.

Now HK is going to make the VP45 striker fired but no one knows exactly when and my guess probably not any time soon but you never know. Demand is already very high for it with the success of the VP9

The HK45 has the advantage of having DA/SA and LEM versions. Looks like you might like the LEM. I have the DA/SA HK45 and it can be converted to LEM if I ever want and then back to DA/SA if I so desire. LEM has a long but light trigger pull up to the break and different from SIG DAK.

Typically one sees the HK45 in DA/SA but they are available in LEM but harder to find. I believe that a factory HK LEM can not be converted to DA/SA if that is a concern.

Springfield XD 45 was my first semi-auto pistol--funny enough after all these years I still have it and haven't seen a need to get anything else in 45--though I admit one day I'll break down and get a 1911.

Where did you see or hear H&K was going to make a VP45? I hope they do, but I haven't heard a thing.

You are on a good path my friend. Others would do well to follow this logic!

To the OP, have you considered a 5" railed 1911 with a 5lb pull? Another good 45, my HD gun is the XD.

I LOVE my CZ 97bd I would recmend them they are very close to a 1911 but 2x action decoker 10+1 I think of it as an updated 1911 it's been 100% reiable fun gun

I have both SIG and HK in 45 ACP. My SIG's are SA. The HK's are DA/SA. Both brands are excellent guns.

Not being a DA fan, even though I have several revolvers, I can't recommend a DA in semi auto.

If you could live with a DA/SA, the HK Mark 23 is an tremendous handgun. One of my favorites.

For home defense, we have a .357 mag revolver for each floor of the house.

I posted this in the DA/SA .45 thread. I just bought a CZ-97B, and I really like it. It is a great HD, and range gun. I guess you could carry it also, but it is relatively large.

You also might want to consider the Model 220's slightly fatter twin, the Model 227, if having a few more rounds on board the same platform appeals to you.
