Need advise. To cannon or not to cannon

Heck yes, everyone needs a "cannon".

First rifle I build in a 416 Rigby on a M1917 action back in the mid 70s.

I figured I had to have one, I was afraid I'd get an invite for an African hunt and would hate to have to turn it down because I didn't have a rifle.

After 40 years I'm still waiting for the call, could come any day you know.

Kicks like a mule, But works good with cast bullets and trail boss. Finely put a muzzle brake on it, not too bad now.

You have to have spares so I also have a 375 H&H and a 458 Win Mag.

My vote would be for an oldie but goldie round: 45-70. You can load it from sparrow loads to OUCH. I've got three rifles and a TC Contender in that caliber. All are fun to shoot with medium loads. The ported TC can be interesting with max loads. Long range trajectory is rather curved :), but an accurate round overall.

.416s

I like the .416 Rigby. I load for it and shoot it....great fun. It taught me how to deal with heavy recoil.....lesser guns hold no surprises for me.
Loaded down, it is like a hot 45/70.
The only thing that keeps me from using it to hunt is that it (a Ruger #1 Tropical) weighs nine pounds.
Note:
..... Plus opening the bolt face, converting to belted extraction and the mag.
Just for the record the .416 Taylor is, yes, a belted case; the .416 Rigby is not.
