need advice on ccw

Im trying to choose between a cz75 compact and a taurus pt111 for my personal carry weapon. Each have their own pros and cons. What I am looking for is a personal defense pistol which I can conveniently and discreetly carry on a daily basis. I already have a remington 1911A1 so this might affect the choice I make. Any inputs would be highly appreciated. Thanks.

I personally don’t like the Taurus line of handguns. I just don’t like handguns with “integrated locking systems”.

CZ75 compact is a great gun to have but to me it is kind of big to conceal.

Out of the two I go with the CZ75 Compact.

You might want to check out smaller handguns, i.e. subcompact.

I too would recommend the CZ. I have had, at best, ok luck with Taurus handguns. Their revolvers are much nicer than their semi autos. The model 94 I taught my son with is still in the safe while the 2 semi's I bought have long been sold or traded away. ;)

Thank you to those who have shared their insights. I have done a lot of research and I learned that the cz75 is a hands down choice. Furhermore, I read a lot of bad feedback regarding pt111 from this board. My only apprehension with the cz is its size and weight which in my opinion would not be appropriate for long term carry and concealability - even in its compact version. Concealability is a major factor for me because it would not make a good impression with people I deal with in my profession (I am a lawyer) if they know that I am carrying a piece, and yet it is wise to always have some protection with me or within easy reach. BTW, these are the only choices which I have in my gun dealer which is within my budget. Would it be possible that the recently manufactured millenneums have improved over their older versions? Also, the cz costs $100 more than the pt111.

I'm also a lawyer with similar needs

And have been struggling to find an appropriate CCW firearm within a limited budget similar to yours. Given the number of places I cannot take a firearm (court, client meetings, etc...) I am particularly concerned about the ability to carry in my pocket and transfer to my briefcase without leaving a visible rig. I am generally discouraged with the options in a semi in my price range.

I have a Taurus PT-92afs which has been a great semi auto. Very reliable and accurate, and I'd trust it without question. However it is a little large to tote around.

Options I've considered:

Kel Tec P11 - extremely wide range of opinions. Not sure I want to spend the time and $$ making sure it is reliable.
Taurus PT-111 - generally difficult DA trigger.
CZ 100 - generally disliked DA trigger.
Glock 26/19 - like the 19 better my grip - out of budget
Kahr MK9/P9 - like the P9 better - out of budget
Walther P99 - like it a lot- a little big for pocket carry - way out of budget
Sig P239 - a little heavy for pocket carry - out of budget

Based on some input from others here I'm starting to think that despite my preference for a semi auto, a small frame revolver is probably the best option. You may find this to be the case also. So I'm off to search the revolver forum for some decent models to consider.

The regular CZ75 is a fine pistol as are others in the line. I would expect nothing less from the compact version. I have held the compact and the grip is wonderful, much like the BHP.

Nice to meet you, compañero (how we call fellow lawyers in the Philippines) FScott. Like you I am also considering getting a revolver as my ccw. The problem is revolvers have an image problem here because these are what petty criminals carry because of the proliferation illegal backyard gunsmiths who manufacture and sell these guns for a very low price. Imported revolvers such as the SW airweight costs more than what I would pay for a cz. Would it be possible for a good gunsmith (we have a lot of it here) to tinker with the action of a pt111 to make it smoother and lighter without compromising its integrity?

Nice to meet you as well jimboy!

I like the term companero (don't have language modifiers on my pc, sorry for the improper spelling) and will have to add it into my vocabulary!

Interesting take on the revolver and the cultural differences ... doesn't seem like as attractive a choice given the image and cost.

I don't know what can be done to the PT-111 to improve the trigger pull (I think someone asked this before and no one responded). I would think that a reliable gunsmith could probably smooth it out some. There are some who don't think its THAT bad and given that it's not a target pistol that you're likely to run 200 rounds per trip to the range through it is OK for it's intended purpose (ccw). Also some don't think the CZ-100 trigger is that bad (I've been eyeing a used CZ-100 and PT-111, the CZ is a little less expensive). I've also thought about a smaller caliber, potentially a Makarov although weight is still an issue.

Basically price is the issue - the gun I really want exists in the P-9 Kahr, but despite public perception, an attorney's budget is not, in fact, unlimited! (especially a younger attorney like myself).

No clear choice, unfortunately. I'm thinking about just sucking it up and dealing with the trigger issue on the CZ100, practice with it and see if I can deal with it for ccw. I can always sell it if it just doesn't work.

I have carried a G30 for the last 3 years in everything from winter atire to summer atire consisting of a swimsuit and a tank top. The G30 is a little thick but overall it is an excellent carry gun. I have recently purchased a G23, The thinner slide and lighter feel is better for carrying but it is an overall larger weapon.

As for the two you are choosing from, I would pick the Taurus. I own two, the PT945 and the PT92AF. Both work flawlessly. The 92 is a little big for CCW so I prefer the 945. But both have gone the way of the safe once I purchased my G30.

How good is a CZ pistol?

I shot a CZ 100 for my first semi-auto pistol experience and it kicked me pretty good after several rounds. It worked flawlessly. Is it a good pistol? Just curious.

CZ 75 is close to universally praised

by owners for fit, finish, reliability, comfort and accuracy. Never fired one, but my Taurus 92afs has relatively mild recoil given the full size and metal frame.

I expect the CZ 100, or any of the smaller 9mm will have a bit more punch than the full size metal 9s. The only polymer I've tried have been Glock's, which weren't too bad.

Its not semiauto but if you are concerned about weight like I am think about a S&W Airweight Titanium .38 with Lasergrips.
Easy to carry in a bellyband or pocket. Lightest weight bang for the buck if you are comfortable with .38 revolver for PD. Only consider the hammerless though...it does not snag on draw and makes the recoil much more manageable since you can get a high grip on the revolver.

The CZ 75 is one of the most reliable pistol in the market and very accurate also.

Since you are looking for CCW (reliability is a must + accuracy) and you have two alternatives only, I consider the CZ is the best.

Go with CZ, you will not go wrong.

I have decided

I have decided to get the cz75 compact and paid the downpayment for it today. It will take sometime for me to receive the compact (1 month) because I still to have to accomplice a lot of clearances for my license. In the meantime, I can't wait to have it and try it on the range. Thanks to all of you who have helped me make my decision.

Congratulations!

I am still wallowing in indecision...

I look forward to hearing about how you like your new sidearm!

I don't know what can be done to the PT-111 to improve the trigger pull

IIRC there is not much that can be done to improve the trigger of any striker fired weapon.

I don't know what your budget is, but there are some good deals to be had on a Kahr if you look. Check out GunBroker

I've already pretty much decided that a Kahr MK40 will be my next handgun (now as to when...that's up in the air :( )
