Need advice on a CC

She will practice with 38s, but why do you discourage the 357 mags for defensive loads?

The recoil with the "standard real 357" loads will be truly horrific in an LCR357. I'm talking about pushing 125s at 1,450fps or so, as the Remington 125gr classic semi-jacketed hollowpoints run, or the basically similar 125gr Cor-Bon full-house loads. These are a bit under 600ft/lbs energy out of a 4" barrel. They'll be a bit slower in a 2"...but still an E-ticket ride to shoot.

The "real original class" 357 loads can push a 125 at 1,600fps or more, for nearly 800ft/lbs energy. DO NOT try that stuff in an LCR357, it'll feel like slamming your hand in a car door. Buffalo Bore, Doubletap and now Underwood are selling this class of power in factory ammo.

There are some good milder 357s that are worth looking at: Cor-Bon's 125gr "DPX" is rated at 1,250fps from a 4". Doesn't sound like a big difference but it is. Speer's 135gr "357 short barrel" is the mildest "357" ammo I know of...you'll get ballistics out of a 2" that are similar to shooting the 38+P variant out of a 5" or 6". Nothing wrong with that, and the accuracy tends to be superb with this load in most guns. Remmie's "Golden Saber" 125 is another mellow 357 worth looking at, and Buffalo Bore has a selection of "Tactical Lite" 357 ammo.

Very simple, LET HER DECIDE

"Hi, I'm a newbie and want some opinions. I'm wanting to buy my wife a light weight snubby and trying to decide between a LCR 357 ( or a good light weight 357) or a 38."

Why do some men always want to make the decision for women when THE WOMAN can make a better choice for herself.

Even when dealing with firearms they know nothing about, they NEED GUIDANCE and not someone else to make a (bad) decision for them!!!

Go to a range that rents guns. Buy a box of ammo and rent several guns. With some guns such as the S&W 342 .38 it will only take her ONE SHOT...

Let her try something like the S&W 340 with .357s and you may never get her to shoot again!

Start with larger and heavier guns and let her work her way into smaller and lighter guns.

"I'd like to have a S&W 342 PD (10.8 oz.)... I'd like to have a S&W 340 PD 357 @11.4 oz..."

You keep saying "I" instead of "HER". Are you buying her a gun or another for yourself?

I have a S&W 342 and it is a miserable little beast to shoot even with 125g NON+P ammo. As much as I shoot, as much as I like large caliber handguns shooting heavy bullets, I will NOT shoot .357s in a S&W 340. When I qualify with the 342 I shoot until I qualify with the minimum score and quit, it is that bad.

"I've also looked at a Bull Dog .44 spc @ 21 oz."

Might be a good choice IF you let HER shoot and CHOOSE for HERSELF.

"I know the lighter weights will probably have more recoil and won't be quite as accurate with a 1 7/8- 2" barrel."

Why not let her try one of the S&W "Kit Guns" or similar with 3 1/8" barrel (in .38 ONLY). The 1"+ barrel length may not matter for concealment but make a huge difference in accuracy and shoot-ability.

Redundancy gets annoying sometimes.

Sorry to ruffle your feathers Creeper, didn't know once you expressed your opinions that a thread was closed to further comment!

I'm going to chime in just long enough to agree with some of the others here. I've gotten to shoot both .357s & .38s from the same LCR, and there's a world of difference. The LCR .357 is a really nice gun, but shooting .357 Mags out of it is, well, challenging, due to recoil and blast. The .357 Mag is undoubtedly a hotter load, but it comes with a price. I'll take .38 +p loads that I can keep on target over .357 Mags that I can't.
