Need a new rifle for Horseback Camping???

Long Path, I agree. I don't know when a .44 Magnum or even a .357 or a .45 Colt or a 9mm got to be more powerful than a .30-30 or (if we believe some of the hype) even a .30-'06. Sounds like some of the pistol cartridge fans have never fired a real rifle.

.30-30 is more powerful, but...

I think I would second the advice for a .357 lever action. Either a Win94 or a MArlin 1894 carbine. Me personally, I am not much a fan of porting, but YMMV. I dont like the powder spit I get out of a rifle round and porting in a short barrel.

I suspect if others were "taking care of" her problems, she would be best served by that which makes her feel confident, and a little too much gun would probably not enhance her confidence with the firearm as a tool. I mean, a .50BMG is obviously a more powerful round than a 30-30, but it doesnt make it a BETTER round for her in her situation.

The REAL answer is to have her put a few rounds down range through both a 30-30 and a .357 and see which she is more confident with. I would suggest a 20" barrel as its still a handy size and the extra lenght will tame recoil somewhat.

I definately vote for the lever action. Its not like she is going to be in sustained combat, nor can the simple manual of arms on a lever action be beat, IMHO.

as usual, IMHO, FWIW, YMMV, and all that...

How does the 7.62x39 compare to the .30-.30 balistically?

If it's favorable, then an SKS might be another option. And I imagine it would fit in a scabbard where the AK wouldn't.

Just another thought among many....

Seems to me the best thing would be for her to try different guns'n'cartridges, before buying anything.

Carter Country folks oughta know if there are any rent-a-gun ranges in the Houston area.

5'2", 120 is not exactly frail and wispy. Arm length might be more of a factor than recoil...And "fit" affects perceived recoil a whole bunch.

Unless a trip is really imminent, I'd suggest a good used .22 rifle, first, for a whole bunch of practice in just shooting a rifle! Hanging out a bit at a range might give opportunities to try other guys' rifles...

FWIW, Art

Call me old fashioned but...

I can't imagine getting anything other than a Winchester lever action, maybe one of those Pack Rifles for the lady. For myself, I'd get a Timber Carbine. In fact, maybe I'll start horseback camping just to have a good excuse to buy one.
