Need a ideas for a new .40 (Berretta?), anything but Glock...

It should be obvious that I am a Glock fanatic, but being that variety is the spice of life and the fact that I have some money burning a hole in my pocket, I wanted to try something else just for fun.

If you had some cash and were looking for a new .40, what would you buy?

Here is what I am looking for:

-Either full cap mags available, or not too much wasted space in the magazine.
-A manual safety
-Accuracy!

I could go with a Berretta (which model?) as long as the .40 Berrettas are accurate. I do not know if they are or not.

I am attracted to Berretta because they recently released a statement telling HUD and *&* to go screw themselves. I like to support businesses like that.

Anyone have a web page where I can look at the different Berretta models?

If you don't mind 10 rounds, check out the SigP226. I have one...the most accurate .40 I've shot!

Looking at your criteria, I think the Browning .40 HiPower would suit you nicely. It has a manual safety, and has only lost one round to mag restrictions. (Find some .41AE mags, and you'll get the full 11 the pistol will hold!). I don't know about accuracy, since I've never shot a .40 HP, but I would think it's comparable to other pistols in its price range.

At the risk of being politically incorrect, S&W's model 4013 is a compact model which holds 9 rounds and model 4006 holds 11 -- only one wasted round if hi-caps are not available. They have a manual safety, are accurate and are made out of SS. If you find them on a dealer's shelf, S&W has already made it's profit on the gun so I see no harm in getting one.

Arrrrgggggg.......FUD, we're buddies and I know you meant well but.....if you buy a Smith make sure the dealer is not restocking! If he is you just put money in S&W's pocket.
Now having said that and after regaining my composure ;) the Smith is not a bad option.
I am searching for a 9mm and asked here about the relative merits of the Sig vs. the H&K USP. You may want to look at that thread while conducting your own research.
Another option is the Browning Hi-Power in .40.

Parabellum's right on the money. A Browning Hi-Power is 180 degrees in the other direction from Glock. I have fired a .40 Browning, at an outing that also included my HK USP45 and a friend's *&* Tactical .40. The HP was by far the most accurate and most comfortable to shoot. I thouroughly enjoyed it. So much so that if I were looking for a new fun-gun, that would probably be it.

For a small compact carry gun look at the sig 239.Get in a 40 and buy the 357 barrel and you have 2 guns in one.

Since you require a manual safety that leaves out the SIG's including the P229 unless you want to fork out the $400 for a TJ safety conversion. The BHP is an excellent choice. Also consider a CZ-75 a compact version should fit the 10 round mag requirement. There are also full cap guns and mags available from STI and SVI. Assuming that you are only considering double stack guns so ignore the STI LS-40 and Star Firestar.

Go with the sig pro. My room mate has one and it truly does have full case support and its a pleasure to fire and its one sig that won't crack because it has a polimer frame.

All of the dealers that I have spoken with have said that they did not / will not sign the new S&W agreement which means that what they have on their shelves, S&W has already made a profit on and I see it to be unfair for a dealer to get stuck with a firearm that he can't get rid through no fault of his own. On the other hand, the dealer could be saying one thing and doing something else for profit.

i have 2 beretttas a 92FS and a 92G Elite. i love them both. they are both extreemly reliable and very accurate. since you want a manual safety you want to get an FS model. i would recommend the 96 Brigadier INOX. its a .40cal full sized beretta that holds 11 rounds in pre-ban mags. the brigadier slide means it has a built up portion in the slide which decreases recoil and muzzle rise for a quicker second shot, it also adds durability and allows for both front and rear sights to be dovetailed (and IMO they sights are better than the normal 96). INOX is short for an italian word that means stainless steel. the INOX model is good because it is 30% stronger than the bruniton model.

other good choices are the sig 226 and 229. they don't have manual safeties but they do have decockers.

Woowee, you guys have got me all excited!

I really hesitated at posting this, thinking that there would be no good ideas.

There are some great ones here. Ones that make me slap my forehead and say "why didn't I think of that myself?"

The Hi-Power idea almost had me jumping out of my chair. I have always wanted one! Now may be the time.

The CZ idea is excellent! I have always wanted one of those (my best friend has one in 9mm...great gun!)

The word "HK" slipped out of someone's mouth, and I did like my old USP .45. I would need to find what model holds around 10 rounds though (the .40 compact maybe?).

Then there is the Slick & Wesson. Sorry FUD, I like you a lot, but I am going to have to smack you for that suggestion ;) Even if I found one that did not benefit them by buying, I think they are the crappiest semi-autos ever made. JMHO!

Sig is a good choice, I liked all my Sigs, even my Sig Pro, but I do want a safety on this specific gun for personal reasons.

The Berretta idea is also excellent. Decisions decisions....

The Browning Hi-Power idea really intrigues me. Especially if it is ACCURATE!
I have never even seen them. Anyone know where to buy them for a good price in Arizona?

I think what it comes down to eventually is that I really want the one that is the most ACCURATE, because they are all fine guns. Rust resistance is also always top of my list since I am spoiled by my Glocks in that regard.

Keep .40 and get an extra 357SIG barrel. IMHO you can't go wrong with a SIG Sauer P229 (desgined for 12 rounds so even with ten you only lose two, very accurate and very reliable.) My next choice would be H&K USP Compact.

IMHO, accuracy and the .40 often don't go together. That said, there are exceptions. I find the Sig P226 to be accurate for a .40, as is the H&K.

How much money did you say you had smoking in that pocket?? Check out www.stiguns.com

...and there's still plenty of full capacity mags available :D

That's the bravest thing I've ever heard.
