Need a good load for a Subaru.

Just recently, my Brother-in-law and I were attacked by a ferocious VW bus ( "It's comin' right for us!" ), armed with a only a .222 we managed to defend ourselves quite well.

.222 will:

Penetrate both windshield and 33% of the time the back window after going through the windshield.

Windshield, dash, front seat.

Both sides of body

Body and 1/2 steering column.

Windshield, fire extinguisher, dash.

Since the windshield was double-thick safety glass, we were unable to make it blow out like the rest of the windows. And thus had to return with 7.62x54R to shoot out the pillars.

I too have suffered the idiotic bureaucracy of Kalifornia's pollution control policies.
I brought my old reliable and rusty 1977 Chevy pick-up into state and had to have it "smogged." It is a one ton vehicle with a 292 CU engine, no catalytic converter, no PCV, stick shift, posi-traction, basic work truck.
The tech, who ran the test, told me it ran cleaner than the new cars off the show-room floor.
Go figure. I think something is foul in Kalifornia, and it isn't the air.

houndawg, when was the last time you had an emmisions check? IL recently changed all the testing to the dyno type. "More realistic" they say. You don't even get to "test" the car yourself. Some minimum wage goon drives it onto the dyno, they plop a fan in front of the car and chock the non-drive vehicles. (WTF do they do with full time AWD cars??) There have been several incidents where the car will lose control on the dyno, take off, and collide with the building and/or the car in front of it. The State won't pay for the damage because of some stupid contract with the company that does the testing. If the smog goons break your car, you're pretty much screwed.[/quote]

They either have a twin rotating barrel setup for fulltime 4wd vehicles (like mine),or they test them at idle (like mine :)). This was in AZ. In ID, things are a little different.

There are lots of ways to pass an emissions test without major money. Spend some time on a 4wd forum ;).

I'd also check out cartalk.com - Those are the folks from NPR. They generally feel that if it runs, and has a place to sit, you should drive it until the floorboards rust out.

You could always park it in a no parking zone and fill it full of concrete.

DON'T SHOOT IT!!!!! Load it up with yourself, a couple of the blondes, all your gear, and move to OKLAHOMA.

PS: We don't ban guns either!!! :D

Sounds like your Subaru would make a great "load" for a trebuchet - one of those medieval seige engines. Saw a PBS show on ancient technology where these modern woodwrights built a couple based on old drawings. These things could fling a 500 lb. ball a couple of hundred yards. Some guy in England built one that he uses to launch old grand pianos & such.

PreserveFreedom,

Where did you get that about Illinois? All they do is stick a sensor on your hood, and a probe up the tailpipe, and tell you to step on the gas until the light on the wall lights up. They also put a mirror under the car to check for a catylitic converter. There are no dyno's involved. If you fail, you have a period of time to get it back for inspection. I even had an older car that I had stripped of all of the emmisions crap. All I did before I got it tested was lean the heck out of the carb just enough to keep it running, and it passed with flying colors.

I am a former Illinois resident. In fact, I am an ASE Certified Auto Mechanic from Illinois. The state informed us of their plans and new policies. Us, along with other shops, were no longer allowed to work on cars for emmision purposes. Only five people in the state were allowed to at the time. That may have changed by now. The station closest to me was closed temporarily while they installed the dyno's. They were starting closest to the city and working away. Before I moved, I came so close to breaking a "state inspector"'s neck for having a crappy attitude with me about the testing. Nobody will convince me that Illinois is fair about anything. They are money hungry and I wish that Lake Michigan would just engulf all of their government. I had just put a brand new motor and carburator in my car and was getting 30+ MPG from a high output V8 with a 4BBL carb on it no matter how I drove and I had to reduce to getting 8MPG to meet their standards so they could tax my fuel more. I wish they would turn Illinouis into BLM land and give the people in NM back their land.

Or, for a few measly bucks you can convert to propane and (A) have cheaper fuel and (B) NEVER fail emmissions again.

Those flat-fours will run on anything short of raw crude, so don't destroy it. You would only be letting them win.

(Gee Mr. Govt. Tech Geek, I don't know why your machine reads 0 for hydrocarbons and sulferdioxides... maybe it's broken...)

not to mention, propane's natural octane rating is 110... read able to make more horses and no knock or ping. :D

And I have 2 horses, The bozzos can stop by anytime to clean up the emmisions as I have lots of spare shovels. The govt made the car makers cut down on CO2 and trade that for the nasty acid rain causing acids that come out of the converters now. Yes you get less co2 but the trade off is like mustard gas. :)

It is failing for NOX. The "authorized" station is a complete loser. The mechanic who is working on it is in my opinion a "negligent discharge" by his dad.

He keeps forgetting that I grew up in the family NAPA auto parts bizz.

Throws jargon at me and I ...catch....his flubbery.

No one can find the distributor advance curve for this 1986 GL wagon w/2.0 liter engine. Apparently the springs that retard the advance are too weak (or at least that is the NEXT thing he wants to TRY)

I find out now that KALI has a program that allows it to be driven under a death sentence for 2 years. That is probably what I will opt to do. During the 2 years, I can still "sell" it to the state for a grand. And during the 2 years I can drive it around with the complete story painted all over it.

Then at the end of the 2 year grace period (THOUGHTFULLY granted by our fair state) I can shoot the crap out of it and bring it in for the crusher.

God, how I hate to be dictated to by MY employees, the state farts that do nothing but make lives miserable.

The state official that was "looking" for the specs on the vehicle had the nerve to ask me if I was wanting to fix it or just take the "breather." I told him that it was none of his "f***ing" business. He got flustered and I snidely told him that I needed HIS information before I could decide.

Grrrrrrr.

Lavan:
I suspect the reason that nobody can find the distributor advance curve for a 86 Subaru GL wagon with a 2.0liter engine is because your Subaru actually has a 1.8 liter engine....<gg>
Is it automatic or standard? Carb or Fuel injection?
Mike
