Need .22 LR Cartridge w/ Little Penetration

I am looking for .22 ammo that offers little penetration, as I am going to lessen the population of pigeons in my dairy barns. I cannot have the bullet exit. We have tried everything else imaginable to get them out and with the fact that they can carry 60+ diseases I need them out. Any suggestions?
 
BB gun.
.22 shorts or rat shot would work, but I think a pellet or BB gun is more what your looking for.
A .410 with steel #9 shot might be worth a look to.
 
ratshot. We use it in aircraft hangars on nearly a nightly basis. It wont even go through the skylights which are made of fiberglass. dead birds though.
 
I thought maybe the TNT would not not go through the pigeon's breast. I will be shooting approx 30-35 feet. We have around 100-150 pigeons living in our barns with 1,000 cows. I don't need a winged-rat giving my herd salmonella.
 
Where can I buy some ratshot? Is it different the regular .22 bird shot?

You can get it pretty much anywhere that sells ammo. It's also known as snakeshot or birdshot.

That's what I would go with also.
 
Dont under estimate shorts. I used one in my garage to dispatch a filthy cat once bloody thing exited and cracked a window. I was only 13 and stupid, but the point is they still have plenty of power.

rat shot the way to go, or a good air rifle.
 
.22 shot loads. I have killed literally hundreds of pigeons and starlings with 22 shotloads in barns. Like was said, they kill birds very dead at close ranges without harming roofing material. A pellet gun or bb gun will damage roofing material.
 
Ratshot is the go I have shot 100s of rats and pigeons in grain sheds.
The only time it went through the iron sheeting was when, a rat running along a purling at point blank range, and a snapshot that I missed it put a small hole in the iron but other wise its very a effective, it also kills possums at close range to
 
Aguila Colibris and Super Colibris. 20 grain Eley Prime primer powered bullets running @ about 350 fps and 500 fps respectively.
 
Does anyone sell frangible ammunition anymore like the kind that used to be used in shooting galleries?

The old stuff was a combination of iron or lead dust baked with a plastic binder.

On hitting the backstop it would disintegrate.

I don't know if that would be stopped by roofing panels or not, or if it's even available anymore.
 
I would def. go with a pellet gun. 2 pumps out of a benjamin is good enough to do away with pidgeons. I shoot them out of my uncles grain silos all the time and that seems to be the best way to do away with them. If your local id be mor than happy to help :)
 
Don't waste your money on snakeshot. It is useless from more than about 5 ft out of a .22. I shoot it out of a .44 mag (#9 shot instead of the #12 that comes in the .22 version) and it is still too week to kill a bird at more than about 10 ft.

For tree rats in my semi-suburban backyard, I use .22 CB caps. They don't have any powder - just the primer and come out of the barrel at pellet gun speeds.
 
I'm with Doyle on this one

I've tried shotsells in my .357 and it couldn't penetrated a cardboard box at 15 ft.

I have used subsonic .22 rounds on crows - works great, accurate and so far has not gone completely through a single crow. Pretty easy to get as well.
Even better for me is my Winchester .177 @ 1000 fps. Deadly on crows.

If you failed to kill a bird at 10ft with snakeshot, it is because you missed.

I've killed phesant (large birds) with snakeshot at ranges of at least 10 yards.
