George - here's what I do to remove the slide:
First check to be sure the gun and chamber are empty of all ammo, as always.
Place a spent shell rimside up on the edge of your bench.
Pull back the slide and turn the gun upside down over the shell and grasp the shell in the breech gap by letting go of the slide.
Now push the slide release button and lift the slide a little so that it is free of the rails.
Pull back the slide again a little to release the shell and then remove the slide.
No effort, no muss, no fuss! And it cut the cursing down to practically nothing.
