NAA 22 Mag, Try This With Your 380

Hi Folks,

I recently bought a North American Arms 22 Magnum with
a 1 1/8 th inch barrel. I was curious about penetration.

It will go through a 2 inch phone book.

I decided to try and see if it would go through a pine 2X4. I
put a 1 inch piece of particle board under the 2X4 and the
bullet went through and hit the concrete underneath.

Using Winchester 40 grain full metal jacket,

Next I put a one inch pine board under the pine 2X4. It still
hit the concrete,

Next I used two 2X4's. You can see that one hit two knots
and stopped short. the other veered away from the knot,
but managed to penetrate 2 5/8th inches through solid
pine.

Try this with your 380,

I can rip off 5 of those pretty quick.

Is it really just a novelty?

I don't think so.

My Step dad carried a NAA .22lr revolver on a belt buckle when I was growing up...so I'm kind of partial to these little buggers:) When I find a deal on a .22lr/.22mag combo NAA I plan on picking one up. I would load mine just like yours...with the .40gr FMJ loading for max penetration.

Oh, so would I! I carry a 1911 most of the time, and a .380...it's nice to have the mini in my pocket though...weighs nothing. I see pics of knives among their carry items, and that's kewl with me. If the BG has gotten "knife close"...I would rather shove mine up his nose.

The bullet has a short trip to the brain...and I don't have to sit in this wheelchair and get beaten or killed waiting for that sucker to bleed out...but that's just me.;)

I'm curious too, what distance did you shoot those planks from? Not that it really matters since most SD shootings are going to happen at close range but again I'm curious.

I don't discount the .22 mag as a defensive weapon, it can and certainly has, killed, but along with penetration, you want the biggest, nastiest wound channel that you can get.

Good pictures by the way.

The .22Mag is no joke. Consider also that the round is made to perform best from a rifle, so think what it can do with a longer barrel. I'm a big fan of the round, but have to agree, I prefer a bigger round for defensive use.

Hay Bangbangshootshoot,

I was two feet away. I realize that is close, but
I did not want to miss. It is a close use weapon.

I carry a 45 in my car,

I have a KelTec 9mm for high concealment,

My favorite carry weapon is my Colt Police Positive
4th Issue loaded with 38 Special 158 grain SWCHP +P

2-3-1.jpg

But, when I am metal detecting in my tea shirt and
pants and having to bend over all the time, this is
just too uncomfortable,

So, that is why am messing with the mini revolver,

I also have a derringer in 32 auto. I am not sure what
I will do, but I find it very easy to have that mini in my
pocket.

If you resize the photo to make the penny the size of a penny, then you can see how these sample bullets expanded against cement board
2 different .357
WWB 130gr fmj
PMC .380 jhp
I don't remember the brand but High-vel .22lr
WWB .25 FMJ

I like my little NAA Mini .22mag as well. When I can't really carry anything, it fits well in the pocket. I carry 45gr Winchester Dynapoint's in mine as they're pretty accurate and consitant in it.

The biggest problem I have with those NAA derringers is that you have to cock the hammer to shoot it. If it were a true double action, I'd jump on it.

Whatever you might think of the caliber, this combination has a certain appeal. It is clearly a high quality firearm, though I'd think you would be advised to take extra care because of the exposed trigger and the single-action mechanism (with a large hammer spur). It is easy to see why guns like this have been popular ever since the flintlock was invented.

I bought one tried it Thought was a waste of metal. Gave to my X wife for SD pistol  I felt better armed with a Beretta 950 25 auto I can fire 9 aimed while you might fire 3 with that slow thumb cocker But My 380 beats them both

CCI makes a 40 grain TMJ (total metal jacket) round

This link shows what a 22 Magnum Winchester 40gr FMJ can do out of only a 2 inch barrel. There is also a page on that website that shows what the CCI 40 TMJ does out of a rifle. Its impressive.

This info has seriously made me consider carrying a second gun. One of these:

http://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2009/11/23/kel-tec-pmr-30-pistol/

The Keltec P-30 is has a 30 round magazine. Thats more than a glock 17 with standard mags. BTW if you look at that website the penetration of the 9mm tested on the website i listed was pretty tame. I might consider that two 22 caliber holes(overpenetration) in someone is better than one 9mm hole.;)
