mysteries of 22lr--part 3

Fresh batch of Tenex and Eley Match came in today--so I was pretty eager to try them out in my CZ 457 Jaguar. Problem is I had taken the Leupold HD5 off to do duty elsewhere, so I elected to mount one of my SWFA 20 fixed mag scopes on and get it dialed in. For some reason, late evening or whatever, the image at longer distance around 175 yds was washed out and I couldn't see the target well so I moved it closer to 79 yds where the sight picture was much clearer. Decided to make a fun challenge out of it--so I decided on 11 shot groups of each of my premium type ammos.

After getting on target--my first group was the tenex and as I expected it did pretty well.

After that followed Lapua X-act--which kinda did poorly compared to what I expected, coming in around 1.25 MOA--as did RWS 100 and Eley Match.

Last up as it started getting dark was Lapua Long Range, which I expected would come in a little worse that X act--but instead turned in this stunner which totally took me by surprise:

You might notice that it consists of only 10 shots and there are suspicious impacts nearby that would have widen the group significantly. Perfectly good explanation (excuse)-- just as I was about to finish a truck came in to dump stuff and I had to stop and move, I couldn't "find the groove" that I had been shooting after starting again--so I decided to dismiss the first errant shot and give myself a bonus attempt which also went wide. That's when I decided to award myself the handicap deduction of the two shots under "shootus interruptus.":D

i was just thinking about the head-space question and had a novel idea. what about building a bolt that has spring tention to keep it tight against the cartridge? it would only need a few thousandths and not strong pressure... what think ye ?

that's my idea, now go paton it.

:D Actually I think there are a couple of custom rimfire actions that kinda sorta do something similar to this--for example Rim-X's; but it is a control feed which woe be to yee who tries to do a single hand-feed. I've been thinking along the lines of a barrel with conical breech face--no extractor/ejector grooves--and a floating bolt head of some sort that somehow (the big somehow) captures the rim but "auto-adjusts" the headspace for different rim thicknesses. Action like that I can see running into the thousands of dollars, unfortunately. I've heard rumors here and there that there are custom shops working on novel approaches, longer range 22lr (100 yards or more) is really taking off and bringing new life into the market for 22lr.

I decided to replace the stock 16" barrel of my Scout/youth with a barrel set from CZ featuring a 24" barrel with no "accouterments." The precision fit and finishing of the bore on CZ's rimfires is stunning--matches or exceeds anything I've ever seen even on very expensive custom made stuff. This $155 barrel came triple-boxed and well--padded--much more than I can say for a $500 barrel I recently took delivery on.
