My wife just gave a sheeple a dose of reality!

A little story along the lines of "it will never happen to me" or "always happens to someone else":

I am part owner of a pharmacy in the town where I live. Small area, everyone knows everyone else, low crime, etc. On several occasions I had discussions with some of the employees about "what if someone tried to rob us?" My answer was always that if anyone ever did try to rob us, it would probably be at night when no one was in the store. No one would try it in broad daylight because there is usually a good amount of traffic through the store during the day, and the police station is a stones-throw away. No way, I said. Well, your guessed it. About three years ago a customer we knew by name came in the store, put a snub .38 to my stomach and demanded drugs. Needless to say, we gave him what he wanted. Everything turned out ok - police arrested him about 45 minutes later and nobody was hurt. Of course, I'm now a little more paranoid than I used to be and watch my back more closely. The moral of the story: Yes, it CAN happen to you!

Red Bull, I don't know what kind of relationship you have with your sister-in-law but never having had a sister of my own, I've grown very protective (maybe even a little too protective) of my sister-in-law -- I guess it's a fatherly instinct (despite the fact that she's a few years older than I am). Not being married (her, not me), I find myself frequently doing things for her out of concern for her safety (running to the store, putting gas in her car, etc.) especially if it's after sunset. Of course, she helps me & the wife out with the little one a great deal so things tend to balance out. The point is, I do all of this despite the fact that she lives in a very good section of town with an ALMOST zero crime rate because one can never be too safe.

When I read your original post about the open windows, I didn't bother to comment because while I would feel uncomfortable with that, depending on your neighborhood and how light of a sleeper she is, it MIGHT be acceptable. However, closing up the coffee shop alone, late at night with all of the doors & windows open and the lights on while she's counting money is INSANE!

You've got to set her straight. I don't know how because my sister-in-law is also an anti (not a hardcore anti since she doesn't argue with me about my carrying -- although every once in a while a "smart" remark will come out) and I don't know how to convert her either but my sister-in-law is more than twice as old as your's and therefore more set in her ways (and despite her anti position, she is very conscious of her persoanl safety) -- you might still have a chance in converting your sister-in-law as she may not yet be fully rooted in her ways. Good luck,

FUD
