My trusty friend is lost in the woods!

A good retriever might locate it. I taught a lab to sniff out firearms in less than 15 minutes. I believe, he keyed on the smell of the oil. My hunting dogs have brought me things I had lost over years without any prompting. The dumbest one of the lot, a Pointer, retrieved to me the transmitter for the shock collar, which I dropped in a section of CRP. I did not even know it was missing until she comes running up with it in her mouth.

i've never had such a thing happen to me and I carry a "cheap" uncle mike's iwb holster with my bersa thunder 380 CC in it. Of course I am of the opinion that if I am carrying a gun I always want to remember it's there. That's why I never had an issue with carrying a slightly heavier gun. My typical carry guns usually weight between 18-23 oz. It's a good reminder that you have in on you and also you'll feel it if something like that were to happen. I never did much care for those pocket guns and if I am out in the woods I'll usually carry my Ruger P95 anyways (I can actually easily carry that iwb with a jacket on and no printing of any kind).

I'll go pick up one of them metal detectors. Thanks for the tip madmo. And the leaf blower is a great idea. When I find it, I guess we will see how a TCP stands up to the weather lol.

Taurus TCP Torture Test video!

Kinda has a nice ring to it...

Hope you find it.

There's a story in one of the Atkinson books on WWll about a GI who was a scout/sniper attached to an infantry company during the race across France after the breakout in Normandy. Seems he found his issued '03 Springfield less useful than expected in spite of it's better accuracy than the M1. After several weeks of combat, he finally leaned his trusty '03 up against a tree in a French forest, picked up an M1 from a casualty and went on his merry way.

Fast forward 40+ years later, during a tour of his old battlefields, he found the farm, the old lane up into the woods, the giant forked oak that he remembered, and there was that old '03, still propped up there, encased in oak waiting patiently for him.

The story ends there, but maybe it'll give you some hope finding your missing fire power. Good Luck Rod

Bushes and branches will snag anything on your belt. I once lost my cell phone while on my riding mower. Never found it while looking on the ground. Only found it by calling it from another phone. I found it hanging in a large bush that I had side swiped. Good luck on finding your gun!!

1.) Responses to police being silly for asking for an address? Who lost it in the first place? What are they suppose to do?

2.) With ownership/rights comes responsibilities. It's a weapon, not a friend.
I respectfully say, kiss you life/finances away if a kid finds YOUR gun and gets hurt/killed. I'd support that civil suit. As a parent myself, I would fear that parent too.

Respectfully, if I am being judged as harsh, I didn't go on the internet and dear diary about losing my "friend."

I started this thread in hopes of informing other gun owners what happened to me. And maybe the info gained as far as a better holster and or better holster selection for the activity of the day can help someone else. After all isn't that the whole idea of this forum? Or is it to bash other gun owners for a unintentional mistake? I understand the gravity of losing the pistol so your foot stomping is not required. The pistol is reported. I can only hope I can be as perfect as you some day!

I second the magnet on a telescoping handle recommendation. They sell them at Home Depot and similar stores, and you can stick them into spaces a metal detector is too big to go. Be careful if it snags it though, a twig could be through the trigger guard!

Good luck!

Stuff happens. If I lost it in that mess, I'd look for it for a few days and then move on. If you don't find it, it's extremely unlikely anybody else will. If it were a $1200 1911, I'd spend a LOT more time looking. Good luck.

Since I was a child, this standard prayer said 3 times usually works;

"St. Anthony, St. Anthony
Please come down
Something is lost
And can't be found"

YMMV

Good luck in finding it!;)
I get a little upset when I put one away in a dresser drawer and forget which drawer I put it in!

Some thoughts

First try a bright light at night. You may be able to see some shine off your gun. Worked for me finding a knife that fell from the scabbard.

Once you drag all the brush, you may see it against the ground.

Once you clear the area you may not have much brush standing to keep the mettle detector from working.

Is your chamber loaded? Be careful you don't have a big surprise.

Lost Friend

This will work IF you work it!You will need a 100 2"x2"bright surveyors flags, water, snacks, phones, etc. This will be a grid search, not a gabfest party!Keep head and eyes down.4 people are ideal, but I've done it alone.Go to last KNOWN area you had gun.Form straight line 4ft.apart,use flags to mark searched square area. You WILL LOOK at every square inch of ground and find your gun! Never,Never,Never give up!!! I have done various searches for many yearsGood Luck,Skeets

At some point you probably heard a PLOP or something that you wrote off
as being a branch falling, a squirrel farting, or whatever...
lie down somewhere quiet and calm & go thru the day in your head...
at some point you will remember hearing an out of place sound...
and THAT is where you dropped it.

Or grab someone that knows how to hypnotize and have them help you
remember everything that day...from getting dressed to going home...
