My run in with Cops, Escaped Prisoners and no gun!

No S*&^T there I was......

My plans for this weekend was to include driving a car from SLC UT to Seattle Wash. Since I'd be driving though Four States and could only carry legaly in Two. I figured I'd Leave my Carry at home.

Do we see where this is going???

I go to my folks to pick up the car I'm driving to my friend in Seattle who is buying it. Try and Start the car and it's not running. Spend hours fritzing around with it till it's showing some hope of running. I decide to try and drive it down to the store to fill the tank up all the way and exercise it since it's been standing for acouple of months in the garage. Now it's night. About half way there, yes you guess it, the car dies. I pull off the main road on to a side road. So I'm sitting in the car waiting for the engine to settle so I can try to start it again. I'm watching the traffic on the main road and notice a LOT of cops running up and down the road. There flashing thier spotlights everywhere and those little lights on the side of the Light bars. By now I'm starting to notice something might just be up in the sleepy little town of Layton. Well I get spotted. Cop stops up the road from me, I'm already getting the ID ready because I know where this is going. I got to hand it to them they were all over me in about 30 sec. Three cruisers all with lights shining at me and I only ever saw two of the officers. Next thing I know I got both hands sticking out the window and my DL in one and my CCW in the other. They ask me who I am and take my DL to run it I tell them then I say "Officer I have a CCW permit but I am not packing..." My line of reasoning was that they probably gave the junior guy my DL to run it and I didn't want him spazing when he saw the permit on the computer. Unfortuately I don't think the officer heard me right because the pucker factor went through the roof . I quickly corrected him and everyone chilled. Another officer checked out my bags in my car while I sat there with my hands out the window. Everything checked out and then they tell me there's a escaped criminal from the County lockup running around the area, wish me a good night then they all tear off into the dark...
So there I am in the dark in a dead car with escaped prisoners running amok and my guns 30 miles south secured in a closet. So what did I do? Called my MOMMY to come save me. Then sat on the hood of my car quietly cursing all liberals, MMMs, Bill Clinton, Bad Prison Guards, Freaken Crimals, Cops who leave you in the Middle of the night, The States of Washington and Oregon. Until my MOMMY came and got me. :o

Sucks to be me.

the People or Government.

Let me get this straight. They went through your bags?!?!?!

WTF did they think? The escaped guy was hiding in them?

Whooops there goes another amendment out the old fickle finger of fate window again.

(Hmmm, unreasonable search and reasonable gun control.)

I understand the why of it, as in officer safety and all that. What upsets me so much is that I DO understand it. It shouldn't have ever come to this! Maddness I tell you. Sheer maddness.

Well, if you get stranded near Eugene/Springfield area I will come and help you out. It is funny how the police, looking for a "dangerous" criminal, will pat you down; give you the thrid degree and then just leave you. Why did they search your vehicle and bags? If you didn't get stopped for a violation or being a "suspect" then they had no right, right? Since you didn't have any warrents and your DL/CCW checked out, then they should have given you a warning of looking out for the criminal, offered to call a tow truck, and maybe stayed until the truck arrived. As for calling your Mom, now since I am in the same neighborhood as her, you bet your butt that's who I'm going to call :).

*To carry or not to carry, legally or illegally, that is the question. To live or die, that is the anwser.

The reason they asked if they could check my bags was that they were looking for a male perp in a orange jump suit. No discription was avalable. So here I'm sitting in the place where the BG supposed to be headed too, sitting in a car in the dark with the lights off. I had nothing to hide in the bags, so why not say "yeah go ahead and see that there's not an orange jump suit in it." I don't see it as a officer safety issue or as a invasion of my privacy.

Sorry about your cruddy experience.

You shouldn't a' been mad at the state of Washington. We have 'shall issue' laws even for non residents. :)

Oregon is a bit stickier about non-resident permits, but if you apply for one outside of the big cities you should be fine.

Um, Dennis, there are stories here from non-Oregon residents who've not had trouble getting an OR permit. Maybe things have changed.

They didnt even care why you were sitting alone, in a stopped car in the middle of nowhere? They didnt even want to help cosidering there are murderers runnig around? They didnt seen to be protecting you, or serving you. Thats why you carry! Because the cops dont care! But I am glad you made it out ok.

"They didnt even want to help cosidering there are murderers runnig around?"

Murderers running about? I read his post again and it said "escaped prisoners" not murderers.

"They didnt seem to be protecting you, or serving you. Thats why you carry! Because the cops dont care!"

I guess the cops should have left an officer with each person they found on the street. Give me a break.

LEOs can't be everywhere at once. If this is the level of service you want you better be prepared for your taxes to increase dramatically.

Let me be a bit clearer here. This was NOT Meiji_man's car, but his parents. Since he had no real control over the contents of it who knows what's inside? I don't mean to cast accusations against his parents here, just to point out that the $hit factor is high in situations like this. Lets see how this would fly. "I had no idea ____was there. This isn't my car!" mrat, are you gonna belive him? I'm sure you hear it a hundred maybe even a thousand times a day. My point here is that the horizon of reasonable is being pushed back on a daily basis. You cops have a tough job, no doubt about it. But reflect on how tough a job we poor slobs have just getting by each day. Lawzy mercy, it's only 7:00am, I've been up for 2 hours, and only *bent* 3 laws so far. Course the day is young.

(cut to visual)-Me jumping up and down, banging on the desk.
"I knew it! I knew it! I knew it!"- I knew that phrase was coming, but like standing in front of a freight train waving my arms, I knew there was no way to stop it. "I had nothing to hide" That's the same freaking thing *they* say. If you have nothing to hide, why not register your guns. It's called I believe a conditioned response. Damn, deja vu all over again. It's the same feeling I had on Saturday when they called my NICS request in. I had nothing to hide, but felt like a $hit when the call was being made. Their building the wall a pebble at a time.

While I understand the position being held by those stating that the "unreasonable search and seizure" limit is being pushed back and do think this is a worthy area of discussion (I personally think that a dog's nose should be counted as a method of search and, therefore, disallowed in the cases of refused voluntary search), I don't think it applies here 100%.

First, Mejii was dead on the side of the road with all the lights off on a Friday night. There are plenty of reasonable explanations for this, but it is somewhat suspicious in and of itself. I am unaware as to whether or not Mejii's hood was up. If not, it should have been since this is the universal signal for a break down. Again, I am unaware if there are any circumstances involved that would have prevented him from doing this.

I'm from Utah as well, and went to HS in Layton. Its a very sleepy little berg and I'm sure that county jail break is probably the most exciting thing that has happened to the police there in a good 3 months. Thus everyone is keed up, nervous and trying to be careful.

As far as I know, Mejii volunteered to allow the search and I'm fairly certain that Mejii would know whether or not his parents were trustworthy enough not to have anything illegal in the vehicle. More specifically, the police were probably concentrating on finding an orange jumpsuit.

The police can not wait behind in this sort of situation to protect Mejii. Ladies and gents, this is the best argument for concealed carry; the police can't individually protect each one of us. Worse, to give them the power and numbers to do so would most likely result in a police state.

All parties were in an entirely understandable position on this. Had it been me, I would have gladly let the officers search and given mommy a call; just a bad situation, not an ethical breach here.

Rae,
Actually they one I hear everyday is "these are not my pants". A least 50% of the time I find something in someone's pocket I hear this. I never knew so many people were wearing other people's pants.

P.S. ALL of us poor slobs have a tough time getting by each day.

Lets look at this scenario a little different.

The cops contact Meiji, he says I have not seen any escaped criminal and the cops go on their way to find the guy.

Well low and behold the guy is hiding in Meiji's car. Meiji is later found dead with his throat slit. All the officers are fired and sued in civil court. Why? They should have searched Meiji's car to make sure the guy wasn't there. Law Enforcement is one of the jobs that no matter what you do someone thinks you are wrong.

Fairln,
I agree with your post 110%.

mrat,
LMAO- 'bout the pants. You LEO's should get together and start a thread about stupid things peolpe say.

fairln,
FWIW, in the same situation, I would do exactly the same thing as far as consenting to have a look -see I do view the situation as invasive however. Sorry, but we are going to disagree on this point.

mrat...

Seriously?? People actually say "these aren't my pants"?
Thanks mucho...gotta a miserable day ahead, 108 F and dealing with public school pseudo-grads. Nice to start off with a giggle

Believe it or not people actually say "these are not my pants". Usually at that point I tell them they might want to use their right to keep silent because I refuse to have a battle of wits with an unarmed man. I keep threatening to write a sitcom on all the stupid stuff people say.

mrat,

As I type I have tears of laughter rolling down my cheeks.

You see, I have, at least once, put someone else's pants on unknowingly. Details are long and not real relevant and nothing really came of it, but one day when you hear a very sincere "these are not my pants," you may want to give the guy the benefit of the doubt.

Jack99,
Actually I think it would be interesting to hear how you ended up with someone else's pants on. ;)

Actually at first I did think O.K. I quess it could happen. After about the twenth time I heard it I started to think I was either missing out on some real fun or these guys thought I was as dumb as I look. ;)
