I always figured I would get one someday, but today it happened. Deal was too good to pass up. Gave $500 cash today for this:

Rifle is like new, well cared for and low round count. The stock is a standard stock with Duplicolor Truck Bed Coating applied. That's why it's black. I can take it or leave it, I like the look of a wood stock better but this is pretty sharp. It was done right and is even throughout, hands grip it well, and protects from weather and scratching. Has a good feel to it and still looks nice (I think, I know others wont).

Came equipped with:

*Wild West Guns Big loop lever. Stock lever included as well.
*Weaver Classic V 1-3x20 scope with Butler Creek caps.
*DNZ Products Game Reaper 1 piece scope mount
*3 Boxes of Hornady Ammo
*Boyt canvas case

Online prices tell me this is a $1000+ rig before tax. Back to the $500, I did a little buy-low-sell-for-market-price dealing this week and when I'm done I'll have about $300-$350 into this rifle! Despite what you think of the Duplicolor, that's a bargain. I absolutely cannot wait to knock an elk down with this thing. Hope I draw a tag:cool:

Good work mate! Are you gonna' handload for it or buy factory? I have a little GBL and it's awesome on feral pigs. I'm handloading 350gn flat points with AR2207 which is the same as H4198.

We don't have elk down here, I imagine they must be similar to sambar deer. The 45-70 should do the trick.

Congrats on your purchase.

Its hard to beat a good Marlin, and at that price I dont see how you could of gone wrong. Happy shooting.

Nice rifle. Just a heads up, that DNZ scope mount is on backwards. If you turn it around you can mount the scope further forward. Also, you have plenty of room to mount a larger scope if you wish.

My favorite hunting rifle is a Marlin 336 with DNZ scope mount and a 2-7x33 Leupold scope. You will have a lot of fun with your rifle.

Thanks for the heads up Rob, he said he hadn't even sighted it in yet so I'll change it up. I like the scope but...I'm almost considering either putting a peep sight on or a muzzleloader scope with holdover points. I hunt mixed country for elk; some really thick stuff, some fairly open. It would be nice to be able to shoot anywhere from 30-200 yards.

And yes I'll be hand-loading for it.

Odds are though I won't be shooting leverevolution ammo forever. They just don't look right, the spire point in that big case. Needs a big old round nose or hardcast bullet...

But the brass I'll have is shorter so I may just keep loading the FTX bullet in them. Only time will tell.

I have to be honest, with the stock coated that way I would have walked away. However, the 45-70 Gov't is a great old cartridge and one of my favorites. I've always wanted a lever action and have eyed a Marlin a time or two myself.

With that said, I think you got a great deal on great gun and accesories. Congrats and enjoy!

Nice gun as for a muzzleloader scope you can get one for the 45-70 specifically for the leverevolution ammo.

There are a few things I don't like about that scope. I don't want a 3-9x, too much scope. Also the reviews match the price, although there are only a few reviews. But the 3-9x is a dealbreaker in itself. More likely I'd get a Nikon Omega in 1.65-5x with a BDC reticle. I may just keep the one though and see where the duplex bar hits. It's a nice scope and it's short. Or I may sell the scope/caps/mount and buy a skinner peep to go on it and still have ~$100 left over. So many choices!

Word to the wise...don't load any .458 cast boolits in it...if you do you;ll be cleaning lead for a week. My 1895G likes .460 boolits and RL7

Too bad he didn't get ya a Happy Trigger for it from WWG, makes a big difference.

Just a thought. I was always told never put a black powder scope on rifles cause you will destroy it.
Any ideas as to why? I believe they are for shotgun/muzzleloader, and the recoil from a 3" slug gun is formidable so I don't see recoil being a problem...

I was told rifle, shotgun, black powder all have different recoils. thats why these scope companies make scopes just for these guns. When I was looking for a scope I found one I like and the guy asked what it was going on and I told him my Remington 700 in .308. And he told me that if i put it on a rifle i would break it cause its meant for black powder and then he told me that each type of gun has different type of recoil. But I could be wrong and he was feeding me a bunch off bull.

I wouldn't put in on a 308 because the ballistics are completely different so the holdover points won't even be close, but that's the only reason that makes sense. A shotgun has every bit of the recoil of a 308 and more...I'm not familiar with recoil on muzzleloaders so I can't comment on that.

nice deal, nice gun, you will like the 45 70 round.... do yourself a fav and drop the the scope/mount and do the iron sights in that set up, the 45 70 levergun is not a sniper rifle - dont try to use it as one and you wont be disappointed...

happy shooting:)

cheers
