My new Savage 99C

I have a lovely 99 in 30-30. It's a takedown model, do believe it was manufactured in 1922.

It's part of my ideal hunting rifle combo, and I vacillate as to which is my fave.

The aforementioned Savage 99 in 30-30 for hunting thick brush on the coast. It has a Lyman tang mount peep on it.

My 1952 Sears Model 50 in .270. One of those sleeper Dept. store rifles. It has an FN Mauser action with a barrel by high standard. I got very lucky, mine has pretty wood. I put a 3-9 Bushnell on it. Not the cheap Bushnell, this one was made in Japan, it's outstanding, very bright, very sharp.

Two very different hunting rifles, one for the thick brush on the coast, and the other for the desert country on the other side of the Cascades.

Neither will ever leave the fold. They will be passed down to my son or grandsons.

Nice rifle, KnightofCydonia and a better than average looking piece of walnut. My Model 99 carbine is chambered in .358 Winchester and I never have to look far to find my whitetail after the shot. No checkering on mine but I'd rather have no checkering than sixties-era, impressed "checkering".

Any idea on weaver style bases that fit the tapped holes? I kind of want to put an aperture Skinner sight on it instead, but would that be a waste for .308 winchester?

Use the Brownell's catalog. I have not bought any for a while, but they used to be sold by the piece (Front and rear), not the set. I have tip- offs on my 30-30 and one .300. Both guns are take-downs. It is amazing how well they go back to zero after moving either the barrel or scope.

KnightofCydonia...Nice 99....I like the removeable magazine option and 308 cal.....I've owned a couple 300 Savages...I have a 30-30 carbine now and won't part....

Not in the kind of places where I hunt, where a 100 yard shot is a fairly long poke. I have a Williams FoolProof receiver sight mounted on more than a couple of my heavy timber/brush rifles and like them for acquiring a fast sight picture. And any scope will diminish the fine handling properties offered by lever-action rifles and carbines like the Model 99. As you said, "She balances very well". Why compromise those fine handling qualities if you don't need to?

I guess I look at it different....I have lever guns with open sights..and levers with scopes....I have a Winchester model 88 in 308 with a Leupold 2.5 x 8 VXIII....I really like that set up....If I had your 99..I would want something like a 1.5 x 6....Leupold or Burris....JMO

Savage 99 bases

I've got Weaver 48019 front and 48014 rear on both of my 99s. Sweet rifle, by the way ! You're gonna want another one.

I have two 99's, one is a 250-3000 light weight take down model, the other 99 is a 300 Savage.
Both have iron sights and that's the way I'm going to leave them.
I've been shooting both rifles with iron sights, been doing pretty well with them considering my old eyes.

I previously owned a Savage 99 in 300 Savage caliber, took a lot of deer with that rifle, most were running shots.
I thought I needed a 30-06 and traded off the 99 for one, that was a mistake that won't happen again.

In my opinion the 99's have great balance and a natural swing.

Best Regards

re: New Savage 99C

Hey, KnightofCedonia, you'll find a wealth of info and expertise on the Model 99 on the Savage Collectors forum at 24hourcampfire.com. I don't mean to disparage this forum, it's great, but that's the place for info on the 99.
