My Hawgleg has arrived

Maurice the FrankenRuger is something else again...9mmPara conversion, gas-powered shell ejection, magazine feeding. Up to 14 rounds with no reload by plugging in a 9rd mag on top of 5 in the cylinder - with auto switchover from one feed cycle to the other. I have two of the foot-long 9rd tubular mags; I also have a 2rd short carry mag for 7 rounds out of the holster and a pair of 9rd reloads, but if I think trouble is coming I can swap in a 9rd for the 2rd pretty quickly. Post-modern sighting system. Off-scale weird :).

Yes, the tube mags are held in by flatsprings made of hacksaw blades with the teeth ground off. :D That bulge at the end of the barrel is a gas trap for the gas line ejection system, and doubles as the forward sight base. It can be rotated and re-set for windage adjustment. There's a shell deflector pin soldered into a hole in the hammer, keeps the empties out of my cheek (they fly past about a foot right of my head).

[emoji15] oh my gosh!! I thought your first reply was a pun at Semi Auto's, I had no idea you were for real! That is awesome. A YouTube video is a MUST Jim right after your patent comes back.

Meh. No patent. Turns out there was another. Late in WW2 the Allies captured an unused Nazi prototype 20mm autocannon from an actual Nazi mad scientist's lab :). The Mauser MG 213 used the same feed cycle as Maurice, more or less:

There's some differences - Maurice rotates the other way, and instead of mechanically stripping rounds forward from a conventional mag I'm using a spring-loaded tube mag. On the ejection side I'm using direct gas instead of a mechanical extractor. But the basic feed cycle is the same. Recoil/gas forces from the firing chamber eject the previously fired shell instead of the firing shell.

The very direct feed path is neat because so far I can't get it to jam. It also doesn't care about overall length and it'll happily eat empty shells or other rounds that would choke a Glock. I want to get ahold of some of Penn Bullets 100gr wadcutters sized .356" and load some extra-short rounds giving me 10 in the long mags and possibly three in the short mags.

Probably America's weirdest daily carry.

Weird maybe but very cool!! It's guys like you that make this hobby so interesting. Thank you for the post. Still would like to see a video. I bet it would get a ton of views on the tube.

Hey Jim

Didn't that used to be a CCW piece way back? I'm assuming Maurice isn't dedicated for that purpose(big guess on my part). But, you've always kinda had a penchant for doing things a little different.;)

Yes, I've figured out a deep-cover concealment method for it. Not kidding. Holds the gun plus the two 9rd reload mags, loaded...9+9+7 loadout.

Unfortunately...can't discuss that carry method in public :).

Another 5 1/2"er...
I have a 4 5/8 Vaquero and my next will be a 7" something.
I just can't warm up to the mid length 5 1/2", I don't know why?
Nice colors!
ZVP

You know ZVP, I can't help but wonder (read want) a 4.75" I think it would balance better. Well heck I need a 7.5" too. Oh lordy, I think I created a monster. The 5.5" '58 Remington NMA kinda got me hooked on that barrel length. I thought long and hard on which barrel length to order, so I just went with what I kinda knew.

A 5.5" barrel SAA-type (includes the New Vaquero, at least in stock condition!) in 45ACP or 45LC (or both) will balance about as well as a 4.75" or 4.68" version in 357Magnum, 38Spl or 9mmPara.

Very nice gun. And as for the 5.5 inch barrel, if it was good enough for Dan Troop it's god enough for me.
