My handgun buying habit is out of control

There are many levels of addiction.
Most of us are able to control our buying.
Perhaps if you make a rule that you must sell a gun before buying a new one will help.
Try to get a hobby that will keep your mind off guns.
Maybe take up archery or another sport.

Using layaway points to the seriousness of your addiction.
I always pay cash or I don't buy it.

reaganmarine84, if you are really doing the pay day loan thing to buy a new gun, you are unable to control your finances and need to reign in your impulse buying or let your wife take care of the money. It appears if you are on your way to serious financial problems and all the heartache that it can bring.

In three words STOP IT NOW!!!

I am curious to see the reasons why the anti layaway people say not to use it...Layaway is 0 interest and allows you to secure a gun that you might not be able to get if you just saved up at home or it allows you to take advantage of a good sale...Payday loans are another story though.

+1 on the above abridged post. I, too, am curious why some of you feel layaway is a dangerous habit.

Layaway actually promotes budgeting and planning more than impulse buying. It certainly involves more self-restraint and discipline.

So, you've admitted it's "out of control

There is a a grain of truth in the above statement. If someone thinks they have a problem, they just might have a problem.

If you need to ask others if they think you have a problem, maybe you do. ;)

Wildly jealous! I've been saving credit card bonus points for months to get my sixth gun. $250 saved so far, at least 150-250 to go! :)

I'm happy for you guys. I should have the means to be similarly addicted once law school is over.

We all love guns, OP, but it's important to live within your means. Besides, a more moderate pace makes each one that much sweeter! It'll be a while before I can buy lucky #6, but what a glorious day when I do!

I've put a few guns on layaway over the years. If I run into something at a great price or something that I think will be gone before I can come up with the money for it. Buds has a great 90 day layaway plan as does my favorite LGS.

When you buy a gun you get a surge of dopamine in your brain which makes you feel good, but then it wears off so you need to do it again.

Interesting. I actually feel bad after buying a gun. I often feel like I just spent the money for the family vacation (guilt) or what should be going to retirement or general savings. But, it has not stopped me from buying. Guess I like to feel bad. :D

As far as the OP goes, start a cash fund for guns and stick to it. No loans. But I see no problem with an occasional credit card purchase if you have a set pay back period rather than carrying the debt for years. Debit cards are the answer to the CC issue. No money. No purchase.

Kinda feel the same way.

I also cannot pass up a good deal if I feel I can sell the gun and not lose $$ down the road.

Here in California there is a huge Cali dedicated forum/classified I can't stop scouring. I've purchased 4 guns over the past year via that damn site  Two Sig handguns in 14 days thanks to the PPT law :D Both are off-roster so I feel like I really bought something cool. One is a Sig P220 Elite Dark with 7 mags Hell Yes!! I should sell it as I dont feel I'll shoot it much but such a nice gun and looks good in my safe.....granted the $$ could go elsewhere for sure.

30 and single with dogs makes buying bang bang toys a little easier I guess.

Master Blaster! Are you kidding me!?!?!? I thought my 15 or whatever many I have is a lot. Wow..nice. Pics please!...

Make sure they're thumbnails or your ISP will experience a bandwidth crash (better yet, facebook them and make Zuck earn his billions...).

Seriously though, I would be most interested in seeing this 'arsenal' (suddenly I feel inconsequential with my measly collection:().

-Cheers

It is not the number of firearms you own, but what you own and what you do with them that counts. But it might be nice to own 230 firearms. I have no idea where I would keep all of them however.

Everytime

Everytime someone starts one of these threads, they say "I'm addicted to guns, I bought 4 this year." Well I'm not impressed. Four in a day, no, not even then. I don't know how many I've bought this year, and really it doesn't matter. However, buying 4 guns, even in a week, is not any big deal. I guess its all very subjective what is "a lot" or a "ton of guns" or what is a "gunaholic".

The last 2 guns I bought was just to quench my addiction. Only $130. hits. Now I have 230 guns.

And to the OP

230 guns? That could be a great collection, and so could 50. It depends on what its comprised of. As for 230, that number may wow some but unless its great stuff its not that many really. Anyone can go to Gander Mtn once a week a buy some mediocre gun and have 52 a year. I don't think 230 glocks/taurii/Ar15s/AKs/SKSs/Mosins is any kind of towering number or great collection. Its kind of like the difference between Miller 64, say having 4 cases, (to some "wow thats a lot of alcohol") or instead you could have 1 bottle of grain alcohol, if you catch my drift....

I also get a kick out of people who brag about how many guns they have on an internet forum. Either you are full of BS and trying to impress those who are easily influenced aka naive or new to guns (for whatever reason), or you are a ______ who is inviting the wrong kind of company.

Winchester_73,

Quit 'beating around the bush' and make your point ;). Kidding of course--I just wanted to add a simple ditto to what you said as it rings very true IMO.

-Cheers
