Ummmmmm..Dennis??? You do remember where I hail from, don't you?!
(Sniff)...and here I thought I was special...(sniff sniff) ;)

Hard Ball...which part of our state are you in? I found Shiner down in SoCal, but haven't found it yet around here in the Central Valley. Lord knows why not...we love beer around here...but then again we are also wine country as well...best of both worlds in my book! :D

(We need a smiley holding a Shiner...bet Dennis would overlook that seven smiley limit then!!!!)

Ain't that the truth, Larry! I live in a city of 250,000+ and work in a city of 50,000 and between here and there is nothing but dairies, vineyards, orchards and crops...and it is only a 20 minute commute!!! :) Far cry from what I grew up in down South in the concrete jungle!

Read the news about Bocktoberfest.
Well, once Shiner makes it to Kalifornia we can have one good thing to say.

Hey Loknload,

I've got a little true-life adventure about Yuengling... I dated, for a short period of time, the daughter of the President of the brewery. Both she and her brother were going to my college.

I knew I was in over my freaking head when we went to the movies and she pulled the mink out of the closet.

Yuengling is absolutely HORRIFIC beer. I'll drink a Rock before I drink a Yuengling.

Schmidt's is passable, but ONLY if it is very cold.

Two of Pennsylvania's best are Stoney's and Straub.

There USED to be an independent beer called Pennsylvania Pilsner that was just out of this world, but I haven't been able to find it for years.

Worst "large" (as in it's sold regionally) beer I've ever had, bar none?

Hamms from Ohio. I couldn't even drink this stuff if it was cold enough to crack my teeth. It was horrible.

Oaken Barrel Brewing Company:

"We brew it. We drink it. We sell what's left."

Little local brewery. Great beer. Especially if you like darks.

Since the topic has turned from great beers (Shiner Bock) to Pennsylvania beers, I've got to tell you this story.

A work friend and I were on our way from NY to Aniston, AL on an engineering mission of mercy in the '70s (their computer had gone casters up). We had to change planes in Pittsburgh, so we headed for one of the airport bars. My friend says to the bartender in a very enthusiastic tone, "Say, do you still have Iron City beer on tap here?" The bartender replies, just as enthusiastically, "Why, yessir, we sure do!" My friend then says, "Well damn, then just give me a Bud in a bottle." I laughed all the way to Alabama.

Aaahhh, Brewski.

I remember quite vividly when I was a young'un, back in the day when Coors was not shipped east of the Mississippi river as it did not have any preservatives in it back then. This was in '71.

My family was on vacation from here in Ohio to the great Southwest. As soon as we crossed the Mississippi near Memphis, the first thing Dad did was to pull over at the first opportunity to buy a six pack of Coors. That meant that each of us, kids included, had a beer. We went driving down the Interstate each drinking a Coors. It was an experience to remember!

Bad Pennsylvania beers? How about Iron City or P.O.C.?

Texas beers? Long ago I used to drink Pearl when I could find it. I only got it because of the pertoglyphs inside of the caps. If I couldn't figure it out, I must have had too many.

Right now I'm sucking down a Warsteiner (actual German BEER!) Give it a try!

Hey Mal,

Hint for you... Budweiser is an IC drinker's urine. :)

I'm no great fan of IC, but it is one hell of a lot better than Sludgemeister. IC is best consumed after a long, hot day of either laying asphalt, cutting wood, or setting shingles.

Cougar, what is P.O.C.? I've either not heard of it, or I'm not connecting the initials.

As for Coors, one of the main reasons why it wasn't available east of the Mississippi is that the Teamsters were boycotting the company after they broke the union out there. Still one of my favorites.

Finally, has anyone heard of Steelhead Lager from Mad River Brewing Company somewhere on the West Coast?

We can only get it at a couple of places in Virginia. A 6-pack is $12 bucks, and WORTH EVERY PENNY! There is one restaurant that has it on tap, and it is just out of this world.

Well Mike...Steelhead hails from Cali...from around Arcata, the heart of Redwood country! It is readily available around here. I'd be happy to pick up a sixer and drink it for you!!! :D :D

Hey Mike when was the last time you had a Yuengling? I think they have improved their brews quite a bit. All local watering holes carry them on tap. I only like the Black and Tan though. The Daughter you dated probably is running the Brewery now. Dad was getting ready to retire. I think he only had two daughters. One of them was going to take over.
Anyone have anything from the Prescott Brewing Co. in Prescott Az.? Had lunch there some years back and enjoyed a good brew there.
Iron City, Blah ugh PU.
I'll just stick to my ice cold Heineys and Molson Golden :)

Our Heineys got ice cold up north every winter, so we moved to Texas! :D
(Oy! I'll catch it for THAT one!)

Okay, all. Confession time.
------

‘Twas surely more than a year ago, right here on TFL
I said I found a mighty good beer and then began to tell
About a beer that was called a Bock, from a Texas town named Shiner
I said I’d tried beers from all over the world, but I never found one finer.

A couple others chimed right in with their votes for Shiner Bock,
And soon it became TFL’s beer and the subject of many a talk.
Well, not just talk for most TFLers, occasionally take a drink!
So we asked them to try our Shiner Bock, and tell us what they think.

Together we tried a thousand beers, light beers, lagers and ales,
But next to Shiner Bock we found, that the competition pales.
So some folks switched from other beers, to drink the beer that’s special.
The beer that’s brewed in Shiner town, at the brewery known as Spoetzl.

Oh, some beers are darker and some more bitter, and some more sour or
sweet.
And some beers have some mighty slick ads, with animals that can speak!
But try the beer from Shiner town, just put it to every test.
And once you get a Shiner from us, you’ll find out it’s the best.

Yes, I’ll drink the beer you provide and I won’t be impolite.
But given the chance, it’s Shiner Bock that has the taste that’s right.
But enough of all this yakkity yak, about what we think is finer.
Have a beer on me and soon you’ll see, why we “Give a friend a Shiner!”

Hard Ball,

Well I just rode out to the oil field to make sure all the wells are pumpin' okay. Then I watered and fed the stock, curried the horses and called it a day.

So, it's now "tomorrow". Did you try the Shiner? Huh? Didja? Huh?

We await your report with bated breath!! :D

Well, I tried Shiner Bock and it is a great beer! See, you learn all sorts of useful things when you are a TFL member. Excuse me, I think I'll go pour myself another.

Bubba

Thanks for the kind offer; unfortunately Cairns to Perth is about the equivalent of DC to San Francisco :(

There is, as I said, a slim chance I'll be in the US in March next year. I'll try a Shiner then.

Cheers

B
