My first SKS

I saw it yesterday...I had NO idea I wanted one (sound familiar).
The dealer had a Russian 1951 Tula. It was like new. When he said a C&R works...I had lots to think about. This morning I went back and picked the ol' girl up.
I also grabbed a few boxes of ammo (1/2 case to start)...Wolf thru a local dealer at $50.00 1/2 case turned my head.
Off to the farm I went. What a fun gun. I did not use up the whole 1/2 case...but plan to finish it off soon. I never had an idea that the SKS was so fun. Now to get that first AK!
Oh, I got it for $200.00 which I think was in the ballpark.

VonFatman,
Yes SKS's are fun and they are also good rifles for the money. Now for the money. It is always in the ball park if you wanted it and are happy with the deal. You will always find someone who "got a better deal".
Congratulations, be safe and have fun!

I think you got a very good deal. I paid $500 for two SKS' a couple of years ago - one a Russian, the other a Chinese "paratrooper" (16" barrel). Both were essentially new. I don't think I got a great deal, but the Russians were often going for more even at that time, and the paratroopers were (and are) kind of hard to find. A local pawn shop has a nice Russian now that I think they are asking around $400 for. I think that's high, but you did well to get a nice one for $200.

Whatever you do don't get tons of Gadgets and stuff for your SKS. Keep it the way it is with the fixed mags and you won't have any head aches. Happy Shooting:cool:

Good for you! Where in the world can you get a Semi-Auto blaster in 30Cal.Holds 10rds for under $200 bucks! I own two of them:) 10yrs from now it will be the best deal ! you'll look back on!

I plan to enjoy this gun. I like shooters!
SodaPop,
When I first looked at the gun, I asked about the "stuff" you can put on it, thought of doing some "tricking out" on the gun. Now after shooting it...the only thing I may do is attach some kind of stock extend'r...I have "ape arms" and need a lot longer stock...but could live with a couple inches...now where have I heard that before???
Bob

you did good for $200, I think I paid my chinese ex-military SKS for $250, what a fun, it never jam no matter how I shoot, usually as fast as I can pull trigger,

>> and the paratroopers were (and are) kind of hard to find.

my local shop has short barrel para more than a dozen for $250 around,

I'll let you change the stock ;) but be carefull with the scope mounts and Hi Cap Mag stuff. 99% of it is junk. There are some good scope mounts but do some searching here and you find them (I forget the Names)

check out www.sksman.com if you want to see some stocks and parts. Just don't try and turn it into an AK:cool: Everyone I know tries to do it

I tried one once with a Fiberforce (??) stock. It felt MUCH better than the original stock. The LOP is about right for me. I recommend it.

Now regarding an AK...be careful! The things are addicting! I bought one a month ago, and every firearm I own is now jealous of the time I spend with it. This is a good time to get one. Century Arms has a special on a post-ban 10-round model for $150. Add FFL charge and shipping, and its still a screaming deal.

Or get a Romanian SAR for $250-$300. You can get 'em in 7.62X39, 5.45X39 (probably my next one) and .223. They take the standard-capacity mags without modification.

They do suffer from a too-short stock, too though.

Dave R,
You are right about the "too short stock" problem on the AK's! Gosh, I'll HAVE to replace the stock on the AK I buy...on top of Ape Arms...I'm a lefty to boot! I'll look around and try to find a longer stock.

Try www.milarm.com. just bought two new Chinese Norinco SKS' for $115.00 each Cdn. Thats about $75-85 US. Leader Mil-Spec Scope and mounts (replaces rear reciever cover) for $65.00 Cdn. Ammo not so cheap, 180.00 CDN for 1200 rds Norinco solids.

I kept the original stock on my SKS and added a recoil pad/boot that is made specifically for the SKS. Added about two inches to the length. Looks good, and is very comfortable.

I don't recall the name of the maker, but you should be able to find one, probably at the shop you bought the rifle. That's where I found mine.

You got a very good price in today's market. A 1951 Tula will easily go for $300.00 in most areas, and some people are willing to pay more. Commercial Chicoms are going for the $200.00 you paid(as always, value is determined by what someone will pay).

I don't play with my SKS(A Russian and a Chicom) as much as I used to, but when I do, I am reminded how much fun a simple, fixed mag semi auto can be.

You Did Very Well Getting A Russian For Under $300. Whatever You Do, Do Not Put One Of Those Chi-Com 20 Round Mags On Her. If You Can Stand It, Leave It Plain Jane. You Will Be Glad That You Did...................................................

Hey,VF!

I got to looking around this afternoon and found the package that butt pad came in.

It's made by Capco and it's called an SKS Hunter Pak Butt Pad. Stock # 94071. $9.99

If you decide to scope it you will need a relatively short scope and a scope mount/receiver cover. I bought a Norinco brand mount, and it has been OK. I had to do a little fitting and there is a screw on it that I had to locktite, but it has worked fine.

Just a few thoughts. Enjoy the rifle.

Right now it's summer and summer means T-shirt weather (normal wear for normal 'mericans). Wait until winter when one pads themselves with multiple layers for warmth. It may come to pass that that short stock now fits perfectly. Just a thought.

BTW Von Fatman, Deustche namen ist: Von Dicke (dicke is German for fat one).

4V50 Gary,
I appreciate the translation. I came by the name from a great friend of mine who's family is of German background...many generations ago.
AR-10,
Thanks for the head's up on the but pad. I'll see if I can locate one. There is no way it will take care of the entire length problem...my shotgun is fitted...it took 6" of additional stock.
Oh, I checked the gun over tonight while shooting...all the numbers match. I never even looked when I bought it. Kinda nice. I don't think I'll install a scope, in Missouri where I hunt, 100 yards is a longer than average shot. Last season on my farm, we shot 22 deer and I know not a single shot was over 100 yards. I shot three...one at 7 yards, one at 15 yards & the last one at 40 yards. So many darn deer! Oh, and the farm is only 160 acres. The weekend after the season closed, we counted 20 standing below one of our stands munching on grass.
Deer we got! Good SKS open sight hunting.
Bob

VF, sounds like heaven. I'll bet you have some good sausage and jerky recipes to post in the Hunting forum...

I do have a few...but not as many as you might think...I have another buddy who owns a locker and does all the jerky and sausage. I'll try to remember to post the ones I have.
