My first revolver S&W 686-6

I have to agree with what you guys have said. I'm really happy with the gun, but the it's the grips that really set off the overall look of the gun and make it feel so good in my hand.

For anyone who is interested, they're made by Karl Nill in Germany - check out the Nill Grips homepage at http://www.nill-griffe.com

There are some very tidy grips on their website for you to droll over!

I hope you're making the most of the opportunities you have... and it sounds like you are

Where in the UK were you from originally?

I'm a Londoner, Ealing to be precise. Have to admit I don't miss the crowds, gridlocked traffic, pollution, litter, standing at unsheltered bus stops in the rain, being squashed on the tube, car alarms going off (and being ignored) at all hours, or trying to push a bicycle loaded down with shopping a mile home from the supermarket.

Overall I think I've gained from the move. The healthcare system is nuts and needs serious changes, but as long as people who grew up with it can't see how screwed up it is that's an uphill struggle.

Buying a gun here in Eugene, Oregon is a breeze. Walk into gun shop, pick gun, pass background check, pay, walk out with gun and ammo to shoot through it. I'm a little restricted on where I can shoot as I live in a suburb, but I have both an indoor and outdoor range within an hour's drive, and there are places you can go to just shoot in the woods or fields, but I haven't been there yet. I'd love a back yard range, but don't have the property or acreage for that.

That is a lovely gun! I hope it brings you years of enjoyment.

Thanks Jason!

This gun is genuinely built like a tank, it makes my 1911 feel light and flimsy by comparison.

I'm sure it will bring years of enjoyment... provided the politicians here can keep their grubby hands off it, that is!

What's with those really long barreled revolvers over there?
As you mentioned, different counties have different gun laws?
How much independence do the counties have, as compared to the country wide laws?

Digger ...... it appears that "Glock-mans" loss is your gain. You were definitely in the "right place" at the "right time" regarding your new acquisition. Considering it's your first revolver, you picked a good one.

I grips add a nice touch to the gun, and I do believe that Karl Nill also makes the grips for the German made Korth revolver. If you're not familiar with Korth, they manufacture an extraordinary hand built precision made gun with a similar profile to the Colt Python. A must have for any high end gun collection.

Enjoy your 686 !

As far as I understand it, in terms of the legal definition long barrelled revolvers fall somewhere between a conventional revolver and a rifle. In a country where handguns are almost completely banned, they are the closest that most people can get to proper pistol shooting. They are still very tightly controlled, and ownership is restricted to members of approved shooting clubs for use on approved ranges only.

Even as the closest alternative to pistol shooting, they haven't really taken off among shooters. I've never tried one, but I'd imagine the weight pretty much ruins any chance of a decent group!

Firearms law is pretty much consistent across mainland GB. Individual counties do not have scope to vary the law, but there is some variation between the way individual police forces apply some small details.

The only exceptions are a couple of areas outside mainland GB, where different rules apply

Very nice acquisition, and I love those grips. I checked the link to their website and was surprised by the shear number of different products they have. Was surprised by the prices also, even before converting them to the dollar. Considering the quality of the grips I'm sure the prices are justified.
