My First Hand Gun

Go G17.. 4 years Ago i was in your position and i did just that after studying up for 2 years (2 years Ago) i finally bought my G17 and i'm happy for many reasons but mainly 9mm is not as expensive as the other calibers and well just you try carrying around a full size all steel gun.. ugh.. even g17 is a lil much maybe go G19, my Friend did. Also eveyone will say oooo get a revolver because its soooo simple and perrrfect for a beginner "yes it is" but so what... all it took was a day and a range visit and i was good to go with glock.. but i studied guns alot though and still do.

Rugged I tried to respond to your pm but it would not let me

As for other gun makes in a different frame try the ruger p series there made in 9mm 40 and 45acp
if the 1911 fits you get one they make it in 9mm (very hard to find at the moment) 38 super and 45acp and you can get a 22lr conversion kit for it
also the Beretta px4 storm is a good gun
if you like the glocks they make good guns but have no external safety and you have to pull the trigger to break it down.
the Springfield xd series is also another good gun same issues as the glock but at least it has a grip safety
All in all go to a gun store and fondle as many guns as you can you will know what feels right when you hold it then rent that and shoot it, If you like it then go buy that one
what works best for me or anyone else in this or any other forum may not work best for you. None of us can tell you what gun is best for you (AHEM yes that's a shot at all the kool aid drinkers)

Somebody once told me not to learn on a semi, because your trigger squeeze won't be as consistent. Which seems to be true, because I always rush through to the break, and my groups are never as good as when I concentrate. Muscle memory is a pain sometimes.
