My first gun

HK 45

Nope, just a picture I found. Mine is a variant 7 and I don't have the light. I do have PT night sights though.

BTW, if I were you, I'd seriously consider either a .22 single-action revolver or a Desert Eagle for that third permit. ;)

And don't forget to pick up some....

Hey DLL,

Welcome to the board.

I was just jiving pdmoderator earlier. Around here we clown around..sometimes... just to lighten things up a bit!

For around $600 I would say go with pdmoderator's suggestion of the HK USPc either 9mm or .40. But take the variant 1.

Oh, P99 prices have come down too so check one out!!

Beyond these two look no further.

Variant Wars...

For around $600 I would say go with pdmoderator's suggestion of the HK USPc either 9mm or .40. But take the variant 1.
That's why they make ten variants. So's ya can vary 'em.

Seriously, the fewer modes a gun has, the better. In my humble opinion.

And my instructor's too. He used to be a police firearms instructor so I think his opinion might count for something. I showed him the HK and said that if I really hated the v7 I could get it converted to v1. He replied, "You wouldn't want to."

So far, he's been right. :)

Hey PDM,

Could you remind me of the variant 7 features. I think there are around 10 variants but after variant 2 I have forgotten the others.

Hi DLL ... good to see you here

I still think it's hard to go wrong with the Glock ... but I too prefer the feel of the USP (too bad a P7M10 would be out of your pricerange). Also too bad the Steyr M40 is not on the PRK approved list http://justice.hdcdojnet.state.ca.us/safeguns/safeguns_new.taf

OMG, I just noticed that there are exactly 666 gun models certified for Kali!

I do think the CZ guns are a little better value but I've heard the trigger on the CZ-100 is awful (although, I didn't see it on the list).

Hey Zundy!

I just got back from the shooting range and I had a blast. My friends brought (and forgive me if I screw some of these up, I'm still learning) a Taurus 9mm, a Glock 23, a HK USP Compact, a S&W 4014 .40 cal (I think that's what it was..) and Keltec .32 auto.

I really loved the Glock and shot it pretty much the whole time. My wife thought it kicked too hard. :) I can get a really good deal on a used Glock 19 right now from a local dealer, so I think I'll do that. 9mm will be easier for my wife to shoot.

I shot about 100 rounds through the Glock. I started out pretty sloppy but at the end I was grouping my shots within about 6"-8" at about 20'. I don't know if that's very good or not but my buddies thought I was doing pretty well.

I bought one box of ammo at the range and the guy forgot to charge me for it. I let him know and he gave me two free passes for being honest! :D Too bad I don't own a gun yet. :(

Variant 7

Hey, Defox,

Variant 7 is double action only (DAO), no manual safety. Essentially a Heckler-Glock. :D

Some people object to the stiff trigger pull on DAO, but I like it better than the Glock trigger. Stiff, but smooth all the way through. Though I'm still more accurate with my G19 than with my USP .45. (I have a flinch that needs some work.)

Hey, New_comer,

What's the "this" that's coming out very soon?

- pdmoderator

Rovert, you shouldn't have said that...

...it is not a Walther. :)

It's a HK P2000. Heckler-Koch's next generation 9mm unterseeueberpistol. Originally designed for the German police. Slimmer than the USP Compact.

(A "submarine superpistol" because no one knows when, if ever, it'll surface in the USA.)

PDM, you obviously mistake me for a zealot. I like the Walther more, as compared to a Glock, but I like it almost equally, as compared to an HK or Sig.

I'm not one of these 'religious' types. I just recognize the inherent value of the gun's features and technology, in the spectrum of available firearms. For a 9mm or .40, I would take the Walther over a Glock. Would I take it over a Sig or H/K? Probably, because I like the feel of it, but it's a close call.

That's my way of saying that in my view, all guns are equal (I like 'em all...), but some are more equal than others. :D

I agree with those who have suggested a wheelgun, if this is your first handgun. This is a pic of the first firearm I ever owned, & the first handgun I fired:

fdf57829.jpg

This is a S&W 686-1 .357Magnum with a 6" barrel. Sad thing is, I can't recommend you go out & buy a new one until they get out of the Agreement. But - there are plenty of excellent condition used specimens available, and you still have Ruger & Taurus to choose from. Also, if I had to do it over again I might go with a 4" barrel instead of the 6".

Used you can pick up a nice used .357 in the $250 - $350 range. (I'm using my own experiance here, I've been offered $285 from a dealer for this one.) A Ruger single action might be available for less. A semi-auto is more complex in operation and maintenance than a revolver. With a .357 you have the benefit of being able to shoot more economical .38 Special loads for general plinking. If you decide to reload your own ammo, have someone reload your brass for you, or have the option of trading in your brass on reloaded ammo, you will find that you loose way less brass with a wheelgun - especially if you shoot outdoors. For myself, when I first got into shooting I couldn't get enough ammo & the only way I could afford to be at the range as much as I wanted to was use reloads.

Anyway, that is my $0.02 & it may not be worth that. Whatever you decide, welcome to the world of handgunning!

dll, we can all sit here and tell you our opinions of what you should get, but they are just that, opinions. it has been mentioned that you should go out and shoot a whole bunch of different firearms and see which one is the best for you.

and now i'll state my opinion, make sure that you check out the walther p-99. ergonomics are wonderful, handling is damn fine, and it is an all around sweet firearm. take one around the block a few times, kick the tires, drive a few tacks...you won't regret it.

Both the USP and the Walther P99 are worth looking at. Unfortunately, I bought my P99 before the price reductions ; now I'm seeing them for about $500, I paid considerably more.

Also, if you can somehow stretch your budget and if you have STRONG hands, look at an HK P7. They're excellent quality (better than the USP, IMO) and have a SA trigger pull for all shots. The squeeze-cocking lever is an excellent safety feature. However, my hands aren't strong and I had a hard time holding it down for any more than a few seconds or so and I'd release it unknowingly while shooting, rendering the gun inoperable. I sold mine for that reason, hated to, but I think I'm better off. :(

Good luck with whatever you decide.

I have a CZ40 that impressed me so much, I'm now buying a CZ75. The 40 is a little lighter than a steel framed 75, but can be shot well with a little practice. It carrys a little better than a steel framed pistol though. It was my 1st CZ and definetly won;t be my last. I don't think you could go wrong with either pistol. .40 is more expensive to shoot, but more reassuring(too me anyhow) than 9mm for defense, after years of .45 shooting. Anyway, I give the CZ-40b and the CZ-75b(actual model #'s) both high marks. That said, the suggestion of a .357mag revolver is a very good one! I have a Ruger .357 that's built like a tank, the ultimate in reliability, and shoots anything from lite .38spcl to full house .357mag rounds(awesome power), with .38spcl +p jhp's for everything in between. A good .357mag DA revolver is one of the most versatile guns ever made, and a good used one can be had affordably. Good luck in whatever you chose, and remember : SAFETY FIRST ALWAYS!!!!!. BTW, I'm referring to handling/practices - I ALWAYS keep a loaded gun nearby and have put the time in with my children so they know safety and responsability like my father did with me - he never owned a trigger lock and probably never will. I'm not saying they're bad(I own some), but they're not the "cure all" the libs paint them out to be. Safes are a very good idea, especially for when you're not home. I grew up in a home with loaded guns and have NEVER misused one. georgestrings

First Gun

You may want to take a look at the Beretta Cougar series, Either the 8000 which is 9mm or the 8040 .40S&W.
I have both the 8040 and the 8045 and like them both ;)
I also have the Glock 27 and love it

Just some food for thought :)
Good luck with whatever you decide ;)

Man, I'll tell 'ya... it must really be great to be DLL. There are so many great recommendations made here, that I wish I had his choice, and he had my wallet. :D

DLL, again I'll restate my 'standard' admonition that you should really get your hands on all different types of guns, before you make a final decision. Even if it costs you $100 in rental and ammo fees, that $100 invested can prevent you from making a $700 mistake. Buyer's remorse sucks.

And I still say you should shoot the P99 before buying a Glock. :D

No offense to anyone who suggested a wheelgun for simpliity, but it's not like we're training a little 2-year-old that can't understand how things work. I'm sure DLL can handle a semi-auto with no problem and it's not such a complicated thing. Anyone who reads and understands the manual for any gun should have no problem operating it, whether it's a Ruger SP-101 or a Beretta 96G. I learned off a semi-auto and I do just fine. This board, which I did not have to guide me, is also a great resource for a new shooter with questions when learning.

I second the idea of renting/trying other guns until you find the one you want. The one I've found is the HK USP. I recommend you try it oout because it really is a great gun.

I've decided to get the Glock 19. It's used but in like-new condition for $450. Like I said, I shot a Glock 23 the other night for a while and I really like the gun.

As far as wheelguns go... I understand that they're simpler and more reliable, but my primary reason for buying this gun is not for home defense, and I think wheelguns are the ugliest things. Sorry. :D

Thanks for all the help guys, I really appreciate it!
