My first AR

So I've been wanting an AR style rifle for a while and I don't know much about them. I have several pistols as well as bolt action rifles, a lever action rifle, several shotguns, and a Ruger 10-22.

This is just for recreation at my gun club.

I went to the shop today just planning to ask some questions and learn more about them.

Well I couldn't resist and bought a M&P 15 in 5.56

I decided on the non-piston on nothing more than looks. I wanted a decent brand, basic model that I can upgrade later if I want.

I paid $1050 before tax. Is that a good deal? It was definitely an impulsive buy.

I had the guy give me a walk through of the operation and when I got home I read the manual, field stripped and applied light oil. Haven't fired it yet.

Now I have to get all the stuff so I can reload 5.56 on my dillon 550

Here is a picture. Does anyone know what the little black thing between the rifle and the magazine is? I don't see anything about it in the manual.

Great purchase. I use an M4 at work but I bought an M&P Sport and couldn't be happier with it. Your M&P is well above my sport version. The little black thing looks like a mag cover but I can't really see it. Enjoy and nice purchase!

Not the best deal out there, but the gun is in your hand, that is better than just thinking about it on the internet. :D

:D

That is the dust cover for your Magpul Magazine. You can snap it on the top to take the pressure off the feed lips when the magazine is loaded, or you can snap it on the bottom and use it to unload other magazines.

It isn't really part of the rifle.:D

Noobs...

:p :D

Enjoy your rifle!!!

Nice toes by the way.

It is a decent price. When I was shopping in January, the Stag, S&W M&P, Rock River were all comparable in price (for the same basic configuration), and all were about $1k... And frankly those three brands are so close in build quality that it could come down to a coin toss, or just personal preference.

Good thing I cut my toenails recently

And didn't have them painted or something equally fruity.

:o :p :D

You made a very good choice. Now get out there and shoot some.

Don't forget you need to do your elevation adjustment with the front sight, windage with the rear sight. Bottom out the rear and click it up until the 3/6 flat spot is in in the middle of the left side. That is your 300 yard zero point.

Have fun from there.

Buy more magazines, at least 20.

And get a good 2 point sling. I like the Blue Force Gear Liberty Sling myself.

Get used to it first 500 rounds through it at least, then go all tactical Barbie and dress it up if you want.

I can't seem to easily adjust the front sight. I can depress the pin but can't turn the post with my fingers(too small to grasp with my hands. Is there any special way to make this easier

Also, your post says to do elevation on the front sight the manual says to only adjust front sight if the zero is outside the range of the rear elevation. I'm hoping I don't have to adjust the front sight every time I go from 100 to 200 to 300 yards, unless there is some trick to easily change it that I'm not getting.

I'm heading out in a couple of hours to try it out.

Thanks

There's an elevation tool for the front sight post if you can't use your fingers. Its not needed, but is helpful. Sometimes you can use a pointy object to push down the pin then spin it like the rotary phones. And no, you don't have to adjust your front sight post every time. If you zero for 25 yards you should be able to hit out to about 300. And after you zeroed you can use your rear sight elevation adjustment, if you wanted to. But with a 25 or 50 yard zero you shouldn't have to.

My son was gonna get a S&W but he decided he wanted us to build one instead. We started with a Lanco Tactical forged aluminum lower, a CMMG lower parts kit, M-4 adjustable stock, a stock nut spanner wrench, a Windham Weaponry complete M-4 upper, two 30 rd. mags and a tradional rear site/carry handle for about $870 total including 6% PA sales tax.

Congrats on the AR. S&W makes good weapons, although I think you overpaid just a bit. Not a big deal as long as you are happy with your purchase and satisfied with its quality.

I need some practice on the aperture sites.

Don't try to over think it.

This is what happens with most shooters new to aperture sights. Especially if they come from traditional buck horn or pistol sights.

Put your target on top of the front site. Focus on the front sight and let your eye do the rest. Unless you have really weird eyes, you will almost automatically center it in the aperture. Don't try to focus on making it all equal, just let it happen.

Just use the Force Luke.....:D

I bought a front sight tool. It said a2 front site tool. It will not fit between the ears of the front sight.

Did I get the wrong tool. Which one should I get.

Thanks

Mark

That is weird.

Can you post a picture of it?

Does it look like this one?

I don't understand why it wouldn't fit between the ears.

The little "crenelations" on the end of the tool are what press down the detent and let the sight turn. You can actually do it with a bullet nose or an ink pen or something like that. Just just have to push the detent down and either turn it up or down based on where you want your bullet to go.

The directions are on the post so don't overthink it. :D

I am jealous! I ordered my first AR and it should be in this week. I can't wait to get it out and have some fun.

Are you going to add optics? maybe a holo sight or something like that? I am a believer that you need to learn to shoot with iron sights before you switch to a scope or other optics.
