My First Appleseed -- full report

Mosin-Marauder

New member
So, after about 3 hours of traveling and about 17 minutes of watching The Andy Griffith Show, we arrived at the Hotel in Siler City. In the morning we head to the range to meet the instructors and get started. I brought my 10/22 and my Mosin and I got a generous donation of 325 rounds of Federal 22LR ammo. The Hotel is pretty average. It's not very dirty as far as I can tell, doesn't smell very bad and it felt good to kick off my boots. Dad went to get Pizza and so far my days been pretty well. I will post a reply to this thread when we get back from the range tomorrow. I might only stay 1 day if I don't enjoy it (I doubt I wont) but otherwise I plan on staying 2 days, as my dad has work on monday. Anyway, I'd like to read your replies to keep me occupied tonight, Thanks!

Day 1 of my First Apple seed (Pictures of Awful Shots Included!)

Okay, first off. I shot these with a loaner .22 I've never used before with a hair trigger and tech sights. I was using Bulk Federal 40 grain round nose.

These are the first shots I fired today.

Final Red coat of the Day:

I really enjoyed it, I can't wait to sight in my Mosin with my instructors tomorrow. My boss said I could try for Rifleman but I know I probably won't make it. Not with scores like that anyway.

They taught me how to use the GI sling which was a big improvement. The history overall was very interesting and I learned a lot in both marksmanship and the history of the first defenders of our Nation.

Overall, I didn't do very well in my opinion. There were a few people that I saw that had been there before and did a lot better.

Anyway. So that's about it.
Thanks for all you guy's advice and help. I appreciate I! I hope I get better sometime soon.

Shooting a .22 rifle with good instructors is a great way to develop shooting skill. Don't try to jump up to a hard recoiling rifle until you have the basics down.

Thanks for that report and please comeback and say how it all turns out. Your attitude is good, your Kung Fu will be strong.

Final Day of my First Appleseed (I'm shooting better!)

So after about 4 hours of history, review, and instruction. We got to shoot our first target of the day (in agreement with the local church, we couldn't shoot until noon, which I'm cool with.) I started off with MY .22, which went as I had expected. I made a few bad shots, and when I got my hands on a loaner, my groups started tightening up. I think I just naturally shoot better with Iron Sights and a GI Sling. So after one or two more painful hours using a scope, I switched back to a loaner I had used yesterday. My groups, again, started getting better as the day went on. I shot a few AQTs. Reasonable scores for someone new to appleseeds and field shooting techniques. One was a 146, I'll have to score the rest later. THEN. The fun started to increase, as I broke out my Mosin-Nagant (Earlier I had a wonderful conversation with a 1943 Tula owner, we both learned some new stuff from each other. His Mosin was in an Archangel stock and it looked pretty cool.) As I got it out, I sat on the firing line getting my zero, turns out it shoots better at 25 yards when the rear sights are set at 200 meters and the bedding is gone, and as I loaded the stripper clip, I got some looks from the other people that were funny, anyway. I fired my first round and from my left I hear "WHOA". Apparently my rifle was the loudest on the range (Who'da thought?). Anyway, after I fired about 25-30+ rounds. I went to go look at the target and it was so much better. They were started to group better. They weren't all over the paper, just in the middle lower half and a good amount were touching. Anyway, I tried vigorously for Rifleman for the next 2 hours. Sadly, to no avail. I learned a lot and had fun. Before I close. I would like to thank Lawrence, Josh, Tony, and all the other Ramseur Apple seed Instructors. Lawrence and Josh helped me immensely. A lot of personal help ( I guess they saw I was the weakest one out there.) Also, one instructor (can't remember his name) let me borrow his shooting glasses the first day, great Winchester safety glasses. Today he let me have them, out of nowhere. I refused at first but he said it was for a good cause. Anyway, so that's my weekend at the RWVA Ramseur Appleseed Shoot. I had a lot of fun and learned a lot. I'll try to upload a few pictures of my targets, but for now, I'm going to rest. I have second degree burns on both arms from ejected brass, my elbows feel like hamburger meat, and I'm tired. It was worth every minute though.

Thanks for the report.
Appleseed seems to always get good marks.
Keep it up and next you'll be wanting to attend one of the long range field matches.

Mosin- It's good to hear you had such a good time and that things all started coming together. Once you're healed up, you'll be looking forward to your next one?

Sounds like good progress.

Did anyone help you with your zero. If not i'm sure the 25 yard shooting should allow you to move what you need to start taring out the center of the target.

Congratulations. Excellent job.

As you've discovered, Appleseed events are a great way to improve your marksmanshp... and, yeah, they're sort of addictive. And just for the record, very few people, even experienced shooters, "get their patch" at their first shoot.

Haha...
Your targets look like mine. I shot Appleseed last week.
Stage 2 (sitting) killed me. 55 seconds and me, being a bit out of shape,
really caused some rushed shots.
I managed Sharpshooter, so it was ok.
Used a 10 22 with Tech-sights.
Sunday I brought my .223 and went through 100 rounds.
The 10 22 is my best chance for "Rifleman".

I am glad you had some fun and learned a bunch.
The loop sling really tightened up my groups.

Mosin-Marauder--Glad you stayed the 2 days. I shot my Appleseed with a .243. It was what I had that fit the bill, so that's what I used. The AS general rule is, "Bring what you got, shoot what you brung." I too found the instructors very kind, encouraging, and helpful.

Now, you said something about pictures...???

We all like pix!

Yeah, the sling really helps, doesn't it. My HS coach, Mr. Teasdale, used to say, "If the sling is so tight it's almost breaking your arm, then the sling is almost tight enough." Well, he said it with a smile. And he made us all shoot better.

Thx for the target pix from Day 1. Any from Day 2??

I've merged three threads and a few posts -- we don't need more than one thread for the report. And, yeah, M-M, we want pics from Day 2! :)
