My first 1911....suggestions?

I have decided I need a 1911 style pistol. I do not currently own one, and never have. I have decided it will be another 10mm, to go along with my glock 20. I like the 10mm and am already setup to load for it so ammo will be cheaper.

I don't have a budget per se'..But I don't need a boutique Wilson combat gun.....something in the $1500 or less range.

If you are nice enough to give an opinion on this, please justify it.

Thanks

1911 you say? 10mm you say? First gun that comes to my mind is the Colt Delta Elite in Stainless. Can be had around $900ish, has been around a long time as well. Pretty good shooting pistol. If you wanna go cheaper, Rock Island makes a few 10mm's

Forgot to mention Ruger now makes their SR1911 in 10mm! Haven't got to shoot one yet, but the .45 version is nice enough.

COLT Delta Elite is on the short list. But there are others like the s&w 1006, kimber, Dan Wesson, ruger, and Para that I have been trying to evaluate

If you're going to get a 1911, go with a Dan Wesson or a Colt; especially if you have that much to spend. The DW will be nicer. But the Colt will be a Colt!

I think the Delta Elite is miles from the best choice. It's shown over and over that it does NOT have the case head support that many other 10mm have. The Delta Elite that I owned had an uninspiring trigger, GI style grip safety that ate up the web of my hand, and came with a plastic MSH and plastic in the guide rod.

In my opinion, the Delta Elite is a handsome pistol and it is historically significant. And if you don't intend to run full-spec and lively 10mm, then it is a fine base platform for a build.

Otherwise... most other choices are better and offer better value.

At that price, you may be able to get a Dan Wesson Silverback. I'm a big fan of DW 1911s. They excellent 1911s. They also have ramped barrels which help with the case head support.

I shoot full house 10mm loads in my glock with Alpha Wolf barrel (fully supported). 200 gr jhp at 1250-1260 fps from a 5.3" barrel.

The COLT concerns me on that front.

The S&W 1006 is not a 1911. Para-Ordnance/ParaUSA is out of business.

My vote would go to the Colt, but I was at the SHOT Show three weeks ago and a LOT of 1911 manufacturers are offering 10mm models this year. Take your pick.

Lots of good suggestions above, however, for the best forged frame and slide pistol that's out of the box reliable, I'd suggest a Springfield 1911. I bought a NM Mil-Spec back in 2012 and like it so much I bought a second, a NM Range Officer. Both have feed everything I've tried 100%. Not a single failure to feed in over 3K rds through each. Both are accurate and both are solid and reasonably priced.

I'm not sure how well any 1911 will fare on a diet of full house 10mm. I guess I would buy the one with the best warranty/customer service thinking I may need it.

It wouldn't be exclusively a diet of full power 10mm. Right now I have a plinking 180gr load and a full power 200gr load. The plinkers get shot the most by far.

I just need to know it can handle several mags of it and most of my concern is having a fully supported barrel. The glock 20 factory barrel is not, but with new brass it isn't dangerous.

The COLT DE seems to be a frequent kaboomer with full 10mm loads. Even with factory full power 10mm like Underwood or buffalo bore.

Again I wouldn't mostly be shooting full power loads in it, but when I do, I need to know it can handle it

Oh no, you don't "need" another gun, you just "want" it. Admitting it and then go get it, what ever you want. Don't we all know how it feel....

For a 10mm 1911 (something I'm thinking I may need to get in a year or two) I will probably go with Ruger, Rock Island Armory, or the original, Colt Delta Elite. All are under $1500, the first two are well under $1500.
