My Budget For a New 9mm Is Upto $400

Thanks to some judicious money handling, my silly money has now risen to approx. $400 (with m'ladies permission), so do I sit on it and wait until I can afford that Beretta Cougar that I really want or do I go for one of the following (my short list) :

Ruger P95
Taurus PT-911
S&W 908
EAA Witness

I like mid-size/compact DA/SA 9mm's for all sorts of reasons and I don't want a used Glock, I keep looking at the Ruger but it really does look like it was made by Lorcin. I don't have a big beef with Smith & Wesson but would prefer not to give them any money. Other than that I guess I'm floundering, any comments as to which way you'd jump appreciated.

Regards,

Mike H

You made it to 400, try an pull off $460-$470. Your choices get a bit better, new Glock, Kahr, Steyr M, etc (not that those guns you listed are bad by any means).

The only 9mm under $400 I'm considering is the Kel-Tec P11. Haven't shot it, but I've heard good things. Otherwise, I ditto JG and advise you save enough for a Glock (around 450). Then you can start saving for some hi-caps!

CZ75B, night sights, one preban and one postban mags, for $349 plus shipping from J&G Sales. Never, but never have I been satisfied with less than what I really wanted. Cool your jets a while longer and save up for the Cougar. If it's something you really want you'll be glad you waited.

I have a Kel-Tec P-11, and its a fine gun, but I wouldn't recommend it as a FIRST or ONLY gun. It takes a lot of practice to get proficient with that little gun.

THere are factory reconditioned Glock 17s available for about $400, ditto new Beretta 96s (.40 cal).

The P-95 Ruger is a fine weapon, and will shoot with any of the ones we've mentioned.

Personally, I prefer the new CZ-75B, which is available for about the same price as the Ruger P-95.

Hello. For the money, I really think that the CZ-75 is the way to go. In my view, this pistol is a real buy at going rates that are in the $350 range. I would personally pay more if I had to in order to own one of these. In fact, I did. I purchased a couple of these in the early '80s and prices were much higher. I've never regretted it. Best.

Now I don't like the ruger. They don't fit me right. But if it feels right to you I think it is the best of the ones you have mentioned. Even though they don't feel good in my hand I can shoot well with them and they function very well. So I would recomend the Ruger.

Wait for the Cougar. I know nothing about it, but what I do know is about buying guns. If you're having to talk yourself into something else, you will regret it later. And you'll be high for a week after you get the one you really really want.

:)

I bought my Cougar 8040 just because it looked cool. Now it is my favorite carry handgun.

I own a Cougar in .45acp. It's a great gun and I love it. Of the guns you listed, the only one I've owned is the Ruger P-Series. Before I bought the Ruger with the $400, I'd recommend saving another $150 to buy the Cougar.

However, IF you included a CZ-75 instead of the 'clone' EAA Witness, then I'd say buy the CZ and start the collection over again for the Cougar. You cannot, repeat CANNOT get better value for $350 than the CZ. The only reason it doesn't sell for more is because the Czech's must not need the money. The CZ is the equal of any $500 gun I've ever shot--bar none.

Take the long way home...

It has always been my experience that if I settled for something other than what I really wanted I would not be happy with it. You have done well to set aside $400 for a new gun, continue to do so and get the Cougar that you want.

I dont like the Ruger, they dont fit me well, I have shot the P95 and it was reliable and accurate, no complaints there but it was not to my liking.

I want no part of Taurus, I dont think they are solid guns, thats my opinion, the autos do seem to be holding up better than the revolvers.

Smith & Wesson is a good choice these days the autos are very reliable, more so than a few years ago. I could care less about their foreign owners politics.

The EAA Witness, cant say much, never tried one, I would probablly pass on it.

Good Luck

Texaken,

Unless you don't live in the US SW's agreement has nothing to do with foreign politics. ;)

if you really want a Cougar then wait till you have the money for one. you will regret it if you don't get what you really want. besides if you don't get it you'll just have to save up again to get it but this time you'll start from scratch.

For just another $50 from what you have you can get a new Glock. i got my G19 NIB for $459 IIRC. also Kahrs are good guns for under $400.

Mike stick with the Cougar :D You will regret it if you don't ;) Been there Done that  I own two of them and have been putting of buying the third for some time now.
Get the Cougar :)

Mike,

If you -really- want the Cougar then save a little more and get it. I have one in .45 and I like it well enough. I'm not impressed with it enough to get another one in 9mm but that's just me.

If you would rather get something -now- rather than wait till you have the extra for the Cougar then I will agree with the others here that have recommended the CZ-75B. The Witness might be nice but why get a copy when you can have the original for the same or less? I got one 2 weeks ago for $339 and I've been seriously impressed with it. I have never shot a more accurate 9mm. This has to be one of the best buys on the market and it comes with one 10 round magazine and one hi-cap.

Just my $.02 worth. :)

Easy choice, get the CZ75 if you are definately buying a 9mm. If not then save up for a cougar 40 or 45 for they are very nice in that caliber.

Wait and get the Cougar. You'll be alot happier in the long run.
