Forgive me for maybe being a bit cynical, but do you really believe that our wars are fought for freedom? The most common charachteristic I see in our wars is not Freedom but rather self-interest. If one looks to our policy towards China, is "Freedom" the motivating factor or the possibility of getting cheaply made goods while trying to pacify a potentially aggressive country?
There are many Nations and poples that we could help if Freedom were our motivating factor, but we dont.
As for individuals, most people that I know of serve to fight because they believe for one reason or another, that it is the right thing to. They would feel shamed if they did not go, there is a cause they believe in (or led to believe in), they might think that its going to be a great adventure, or they just might want a chance to kill. There are lots of different people in every country that fight and die for many reasons.
But what of those that fight for freedom? Those individuals have fought in our wars but they have also fought in other wars for other countries under different flags. The person who truly gives his all for freedom is my brother, regardless of his country or uniform.
I do not want to undermine the sacrifices that our servicemen have made for our country. I believe we do owe our armed forces a debt of gratitude for prosperity we enjoy, hopefully our National policy might be geared to helping others achieve similar freedom instead of its current path.
