Muzzleloading Tips--Add Yours

I quickly left this thread without comment. There is so much misinformation, some very dangerous, that I don't want to be part of it. And it would take too much of my time to comment on. Plus those who advocate dangerous practices just don't listen and will argue. I believe the thread should be deleted.

Hello, For ease of cleaning a .58 rifled musket, I took spare nipple, drilled out as large as I could, & forced tight fitting rubber hose on. end of hose goes in bucket of hot soapy water, wet patch on rod sucks solution through bore...just be careful at muzzle not to pull all the way out & wrap a towel around brl. to catch water spills.

my only tip is make sure you put the powder in BEFORE you put the patch and ball in :D

I dont think you are a true muzzle loader until you do that at least once :)

For my flintlock I made a device that screwed into the touchhole liner. That was connected to a rubber tube that went to a fitting I screwed on to the kitchen faucet. Then I would turn the water to hot and let the barrel flush out for about 5 minutes.

Just curious but why did you drill it out? A standard #11 nipple does the same thing and a musket nipple is already a lot bigger.

Drop your ramrod down your known empty bbl and mark it.
After you've established your fav. load, load your m/l'er then put your ramrod down the bbl. As always, keeping your head away from muzzle, mark your ramrod. This mark will help to insure you a proper load in the future. I.E.: no double charges, boolit seated correctly etc.

This is basic but no one has said it yet

Don't push the ram rod with the palm of your hand, hold it like a soda bottle or a piece of rope. That way if there is a mishap the rod won't wind up going through the palm of your hand.

The most obvious one of all, I would think, but one I've seen violated again and again...

When shooting your muzzleloader from the bench, NEVER load from a 1 pound can of black powder and leave it open on the bench while you shoot.

Don't blow down the barrel or if you must blow, use a flexible blow tube. You don't want a mouthful of sparks or worse, a mouthful of blast.
