I also agree the Glock 19 is the way to go. Nice shooting, accurate and a little more concealable than a 4" S&W 686. Though the idea of using the 686 with .38's is a good idea to my way of thinking.
 
For what I use them for(hunting) the chances are slim that I will get more than one shot anyway.
Well you also mentioned target shooting. If you put .38 spl loads in the .357 magnum and .44 spl loads in the .44 magnum then recoil should be no problem and you have 2 dandy target shooting revolvers. When considering your thread's title you already have 2 multipurpose handguns. You just need a service handgun for the job.
