Multi State Handgun concealed carry permit?

Nasty, That would be importing and would need an import license.

Boxjeff, Having a CCW has nothing to do with carrying protection in Alaska unless the firearm is concealed. If you're out hiking and have an EXPOSED holster with your handgun in it, you're good to go.

However, As Nasty said, good luck getting thru Canada with guns. They only allow hunting rifles. No handguns. Therefore, if having your gun with you in that important, either drive or fly to Washington state then take one of the direct ferry's to Ketchikan/Sitka/Petersburg/Juneau/Anchorage, and continue your travels that way. (BTW, That would be a GREAT way to see SE Alaska on your way to mainland AK.) Or you can ship your handgun to an FFL ahead of your travels, maybe from which ever town you intend to cross into Canada from, then pick it up when you enter AK....... You've got options.

FYI, if you're doing mostly "touristy" type hiking and explorations, you probably wont need a gun for bears, just make plenty of noise and they'll go running off long before you have any idea they were there.

boxjeff, here's just one problem I see.

the federal transportation law where you can drive from one state to another as long as the gun(s) are unloaded and locked in the truck only works if you are traveling from a state where it is legal for you to have the gun to another state the same.

So, first you have to be able to legally own and transport the gun (long or short) in your home state of New Jersey.... there is your biggest deal in this.

Since you can ship to yourself without FFL involved best way to get your gun(s) to Alaska is to ship them. Much less costly than doing their paperwork and fees.

Some states like Florida have reciprocal agreements with other CC permit states. Florida permits are recognized and valid in at least 29 other states.

To date, with changes in agreements with other states the number is up to 33 for a Florida resident CCW permit holder

I've recently moved into Mississippi, which requires you to live here in order to establish residency for a carry permit. I moved from Georgia, and have had a carry permit there since 2000.

Is my Georgia permit still valid for purposes of carrying here in Mississippi in the mean time, or is it void since I'm no longer a resident of the state? Neither state issues non-resident permits. It seems like I'm just stuck for the next 6+ months, but I have not been able to find a definite answer to this question on handgunlaw.us or the websites of each state.

I would like to comment on some of the posts in this thread.

I do agree that it is ludicrous for a State Issued CCW not to valid in all 50 States. A license to carry a concealed firearm should be a National license. The way the system is now, it is like saying that you can only drive your car in those States that recognize your State and the others will not allow you to operate a motor vehicle.

With regard to Canada, if you have all the proper paper work, you can take your gun across the border to a SPECIFIC NAMED EVENT OR SHOOTING RANGE, period. Several years ago, after filling out all the paperwork, I attempted to take my gun in my motorhome across the border. I learned of this at that time. Further, since I had a Florida License Plate, it was assumed I was a drug runner and I was detained for more than two hours while they emptied everything to search every nook and cranny for illicit cargo. To show you how far they went, I had to empty all the cigars in my humidor. We were allowed 50 cigars each without duty, and I had 99 cigars. We had been collecting wine on our travels and they hit me up for $88 duty for my wine collection. I would have left it and reclaimed it but we were not sure we were going to cross back into the US at the same checkpoint.

Our neighbors to the north will never see me spending my dollars in their country again unless I happen to be stranded on an International flight with no way out.

I guess if I had read the Mississippi statute in a bit more detail, I would have found the clause that said that says you don't have to meet the 12 month requirement if you already hold a valid permit in another state. DOH!

So, ya think we need a federal nationwide reciprocity law. A CCW permit in your home state would be valid in any state. Weather or not they have their own.
Ain't gonna happen in the Obamanation!!!!

While the current state of affairs is less than optimal, I am extremely skeptical of the idea that getting the federal government involved will make things better.
