mugged

The thing is, in a classroom demonstration, you are expecting to react. How many of us in our day to day activities are expecting a threat to materialize at any moment? Talk about acting paranoid! I would expect that the same action, when it's not expected would have a much slower reaction, and action than any classroom demo.

I have a question...if this same thing happened now in the same city, would they have let you go? I have never been to the North-East and have no plans to either, just seems like crime has gotten a lot more violent and there is less hesitation to kill people. I do think 25 years has brought more douchebags with less conscience.

The reason I pose this question is would it change your mind about trying to fight it out now as compared to then?

Very well put if I had not known he was going to run at me with a knife and was told to draw down on him. My reaction time would have been alot slower. In the 2 secs it took him to cover the ground I might not have even enough time to get to my concealed weapon let alone draw down on him.

Yes, just about anyone in any kind of shape can cover those 21 feet within 2 seconds, and no, you're probably not going to get the gun out that quick unless you know it's coming. That's why situational awareness is so important.
My IDPA club ran a stage just to check everyones time to draw and fire one round from concealment. Most folks ran in the mid 2 second range, and that's KNOWING they had to draw and fire.

I was mugged at knife point when I was 14 walking home from the Grand Army Plaza library. I lost a buck before I resorted to advanced feet-fu. Applied the footsies rapidly to the sidewalk and headed for the horizon.

"But what exactly can you do if a person has a knife to your neck. If you try to fight then you will just get cut."

Sometimes stress clouds your judgment; that's why thinking things through in advance puts you at an advantage. What would you do in x, y, z, situation...??? You can't cover everything, but just thinking it through will leave you better prepared when a situation does occur.

Yep. Just get cut. You'll live... You grab the knife tightly, and give the attacker a sharp jab in the throat to collapse his windpipe. Think about it; Are you going to die from a few cut fingers? It's doubtful. Fight like hell, and never allow yourself to be taken to another location.

Another thought regarding the 21 foot rule is: The attacker may be able to reach you in 2 seconds ***IF*** you just stand still and do not take evasive action. Classroom role playing is great, but not very realistic. Who stands still while someone is coming at them with a knife? I'd be dropping and rolling while I was retrieving my gun.

ATM's are the watering holes of the urban Serengeti.

So naturally, that's going to be where predator and prey will meet. :)
