MSAR?

of course they are sexy. of course they accept 42 rnd mags. IT LOOKS LIKE THE AUG FOR F'S SAKE! question is - is it worth the $1200+? experienced owners comments only please.

I've got one I bought from Bud's. Green, 20", factory optic. Mine worked perfectly from the beginning. I've removed the little factory scope and replaced it with a Talon mount and a Burris Tac 30 scope. And put the improved and lengthened charging handle on it. And the little piece of metal you can add to the trigger pack for a better release.

IMO, the only negative to buying one is that the company is a source of endless drama and utter BS. On the positive side, you can mostly ignore MSAR and get whatever you need from Ratworx instead.

And there is a forum where this company has been discussed endlessly:

Tulsamal pretty much nailed it, IMHO.

I have personal experience w/6 different STG's from an early Gen2 to a late Gen4, appx 10K+ rds cumulative total.

One had to be returned to MSAR for extraction problems (promptly fixed & returned), I've had several of the old-style extractors break (new-style extractor is GTG) and broken two bolt sleeves to date.
All other problems are related to new rifles that haven't worn-in yet (mine have all come tight from the factory).

All my STG's are 100% w/brass-cased ammo but reliability w/steel-cased varies from rifle to rifle (just like w/AR's) w/at least 100rds of full-power 5.56 required before steel-cased ammo starts functioning reliably (YMMV).

I've considered other platforms but keep coming back to the size/handling advantages of the STG (16" ballistics in an SBR-sized package w/o the paperwork). Nothing else handles as well for me, even after running them through a couple of carbine classes (where my best friend [cop] fell in love w/the STG so I ended up giving him the one he ran the class with).

If you buy now you're taking a small risk of getting a "bad" one but w/upwards of 15,000 STG's/E4's out there I think the risk is very small (again, YMMV).

I own a MSAR XM17-E4; the AUG Clone that takes AR-15 magazines. I have had only two small issues with my rifle. One was a sling stud got stuck and the other was that my rifle's stock came with the plastic mag catch. I sent my stock off to MSAR and they fixed it ASAP.

I've had no issue with my rifle. It runs like a top on cheap Wolf Ammo. Works with all of my AR-15 mags except my one Canadian Thermold. It works with Pmags, GI mags, etc....

I have only but praise for it.

If I found that deal, I'd be on it like white on rice. I've been REALLY close to getting an MSAR several times in the past.

If a E4 came my way for a good price, it's a good bet it may end up in my safe

weird thing is, it was listed on auction arms multiple times at $1190 plush $35 shipping and cc fees with no bids. i pm'ed him and told him to drop it to $1125, drop shipping and credit card fees, and i would bid. didn't think he would go for it. he did.

headed to the range tomorrow. my buddy is bringing his steyr aug. we will have to see how it holds up against the original :D

i'll post range report pics and hopefully a side by side with the aug.

here's my new baby:

just got back from the range. i had taken a picture of the first grouping with my phone, but when i got home, i realized it didn't save the picture. anyways, the grouping held a 3in radius from 22.5yds at a fairly quick rate of fire from a standing position. i absolute love this thing. so much cooler than my AR, even without any nifty optics. i just won an auction for a stock rail system. i can't wait to get my eotech on this thing. might even put the flip mount magnifier on it too as long as it doesn't get too heavy.

I wanted my MSAR to retain "the AUG look" so I went with the new Talon mounts. You unbolt your existing little scope and then bolt the new mount in place. It just looks more "correct" to me than a standard flat top with standard scope mounts. And it puts the scope at just exactly the right height. Something people with flat tops and AR mounts are always fussing about.

Buy the charging handle from them while you are there. SO much better than the original. Then all you need to do is to get the little metal piece that goes in your trigger pack. Or just buy the new trigger packs that use AR-15 parts! And the replacement bolt that also uses AR parts. Makes it a lot easier to stock up some spare parts. Ratworx has them in stock.

Glad you got a good one. I wish I would have waited a year or two to get one. I bought the Gen 1 LTD series which came with the pelican case, knife, sling and mags. Mine was so bad that after several trips to MSAR for repairs, I eventualy asked for my money back.

They seem to have gotten the bugs worked out by now. I might get one next year, b/c I love the look of the old school AUG.

i need to stop buying upgrades for this thing! i've had it a week, and i already have a new charging handle, a top rail, and a trigger mod! now i just need a sling...
