Mrs. Bush

I always cringe when the president, as he did over and over in his news conference last week, refers to the nuclear non proliferation issues with which his administration is grapling as "nu-kya-lur". It just sounds so da*n dumb.

I've heard nuclear operators and engineers pronounce it the same way. Even I've done it, and I grew up beside Oak Ridge. It may be wrong, but it's a common error.

buzz - The "error" in pronunciation of the word, nuclear, incorporating a "y" sound between the "c" and the "l" is in point of fact no longer an error! Merriam - Webster on-line dictionary shows BOTH pronunciations as acceptable. This seeming oddity is primarily due to USAGE. And, as you so aptly pointed out, even folks working and growing up in Oak Ridge, where the term is a constant, pronounce the non-existent "y". At some point I'll wager that the word, "ask", will possess an alternative pronunciation so often heard among the African American community, "aks". No disrespect intended. Usage is the key.

Laura Bush is first-class all the way. I also thought Barbara Bush was a class act as First Lady (although I didn't know she was like Don Corleone).

GW's mangling of words is a minor defect, and one that I think endears him to people. It makes him seem real.

As for his drinking and partying, who cares? He gave it up.

At Lincoln's first inauguration, his vice president--Hannibal Hamlin--was so drunk that he couldn't even stand up and speak. Ulysses Grant wasn't exactly a teetotaller, and neither was Churchill. In fact, Churchill would usually have his first drink around 10 am.

One of the chairs in the House chamber was modified many years ago so that an often-drunk congressman would stop falling out of it.

How times have changed.

Mrs. Bush ...........

Thanks for this interesting and funny little gig............glad I started the campfire in the first place....... I bet we could all just about agree on one thing for sure.............. Ain't Life a joke?........ We (most of us) came into it-in an unpleasant way. One second we are warm and it's dark and comfy then bamo.....It got bright and chilly, a bunch of people in pastel cotton smocks passed us around the room, put cold stainless steel against our pink tender skin, wiped off the gooo that lubed our exit, and if we were lucky, we were the hell out of there in 2-3 days. Got ya to laugh didn't I?........ bet we weren't so happy when it was us going through that? Case in point here: Some things are just funny and Mrs. Bush was all of that..... :D

The First Lady is a class act indeed. I think if we had more First Lady's like her, in this world we could all take a chill and enjoy life for a minute..... ;)
