Moving to NYC area...

"I HATE DEMOCRATS"

Sadly, it is a Republican Mr Pataki who is governor and passed the NYS Assault Weapons ban amongst other anti gun measures. I understand his wife is a rabid anti.

NY City is run by a Republican Mayor (Bloomberg) who wants to sue every gun maker and owner he can. And the people who were able to get carry permits in NYC in past eras had them taken away by ex Mayor Guiliani, another Republican.

Maybe you should go the home defense shotgun route. I hear it's not really hard to get permit for a shotgun up there. It's probably because shotguns aren't normally used to kill people.

If I absolutely had to go somewhere (to live) where I couldn't have a handgun I would either smuggle it it in (piece by piece if I had to!!!) or go the shotgun route.

I can accept laws that say what I can not do in public a little easier than ones that say what I can not do in my own home.

Another point, just for the record. In NYC it's illegal to possess a cartridge for a weapon that you are not licensed to own.

Also, the pistol license has to be renewed every two or three years, I forget which. At least it did when I was there.

The thing that ticked me off the most when I got my license is that you had to give them two passport photos taken within six months. It took them nine months to call me back, and they told me I had to bring two more photos since the ones I gave originally were now over six months old.

"Not really hard to get a shotgun permit" is relative. Expect the permit to take months.

The permitting process is also involved, requiring references and intrusive checks into your mental health/military records/employment.

If you must move to NYC, plan to do it without your guns.

Strangely, thought it doesn't seem illegal for non-handgun licensees outside of NYC to possess handgun ammo, it IS illegal for firearm dealers to sell handgun ammo to non-handgun licensees.
