Moving to NYC area...

Hey everyone...I was hoping to get some input...

I am currently a resident of Connecticut where I have my state pistol permit to carry. However, I have recently accepted a new job in NY, and will be moving to the Queens area. My question is this: Does anyone know what I need to do to make my currently owned handguns legal in NY? I have tried (several times) calling the NY State Police firearms unit, but have gotten voicemail, and although I left messages I have not gotten a response. I also looked at the NRA website and tried to figure it out. Most of what I found pertained to purchasing and carrying a gun, but not specifically to persons who already own firearms and are changing residences. I will not be carrying, but want to be legal for home defense and range use.

If there are any cops out there, or anyone with a similar experience....help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

-K

If you absolutely must move within the 5 boros of NYC, the best advice I can give is... take the barrel of one of your guns, insert in mouth, and pull trigger.

Seriously. DO NOT move to NYC. Rockland county is only 1/2 hour from Manhattan. Orange county is about a 1 to 1 1/2 hour drive.

Or try Long Island, Nassau or Suffolk. But DO NOT MOVE TO NYC and expect to keep your guns or have ANY carry rights.

I would suggest that you contact the NYPD Pistol License Bureau. You might get some information from them, if you get a reply, that is.

Other than that, suggestions re NOT moving into NYC being passed by, I would say the following. Lacking appropriate political/business connectiions and or sufficient personal wealth, you have four chances of getting an unrestricted carry permit. Fat, Slim, Little and No. I could be wrong on this, but I lived in NYC for many years, left in 1967, and I do not believe that the situation there has improved, resecting choices available to the ordinary, law abiding citizen.

Unfortunately, I believe that The Blues Man is correct.

Moving to Queens?
ONLY thing to do if retention of arms is your goal, is to find CT friend or storage while you are in NYC........period. You may expire before you complete the long and arduos hoop-jumping, delayed process necessary for limited ownership within the City. Like others have said, better not to go........:barf:

I moved in 2001-2. And I agree with Alan. It was not any better then, I doubt any better now.

Only criminals are allowed to carry weapons in NYC. Therefore, you can go unarmed or choose to be a criminal as well.

My condolences.

From what I have heard, getting a permit is not a problem...if you are a mobster, the mayor, or P.Diddy

I am sooooo saddened by your predicament.:( :( :(
My heart goes out to you in this time of need.

I LOVE NY!!!!

Curiosity yields evolution...satiety yields extinction.

There are several things you must do, and be prepared to spend lots of money. You will only get a Premise license, which lets you have guns at home. You won't get a carry license.

The first thing to do is to have an FFL in Connecticut mail your guns to an FFL in New York. The New York FFL doesn't have to be in the city, so shop around for the best price on transfers. I used The Firing Line (no, really) in Pearl River NY (Rockland County, 20 min north of NYC.) They charged 45 bucks, which is steep. I didn't shop around. :(

Oh, you MUST have an FFL in Connecticut mail the handgun to the NY FFL. Despite what people will tell you, you can't do it yourself. Yes, federal law allows you to mail the gun. However, New York State law doesn't allow the firearm dealers to accept handguns from "unauthorized" sources...and NY considers you unauthorized.

Once you've made arrangement for a NY dealer to receive and store your gun for 9 months, you can move to NYC. Once you get here you must go to 1 Police Plaza, down by City Hall, and pick up a handgun license application. It's a good idea to get some help filling out the application, especially since the application must be type written. West Side Pistol Range provides this service. I think it was 20 or 25 bucks. You answer all the questions and they will type it up. They also can offer guidance when you don't exactly know how to answer a question. They know what's good to say and what's bad to say.

Once your app is filled out you take it back to 1 Police Plaza and give them the app and two checks...one for 340 bucks and the other for 99 bucks. Then they fingerprint you. Now you go home and wait.

In 6 months someone will call to interview you. During the interview they'll probably ask why you want a gun. Simply say that you already have guns and tell the officer that they're currently being stored at a gun shop. Mention your concealed carry license. He'll ask you to get a letter from the gun shop stating that the guns are yours, and listing the make, model, caliber, and serial numbers. He'll also ask you for character references, payroll stubs, anything else they think will make your life hard.

If all goes well, in another three months you'll get a letter telling you when to come get your license. And if it all goes really well, your guns will already be on your license, and you'll get a property release form so you can get your guns. If things don't go really well, you may need to get your guns one at a time by submitting a purchase request for each gun. That will be a real pain.

Of course, the worse thing that can happen is that you'll be rejected. However, they have to have a good reason for rejecting you. You can appeal a rejection and the city has to go before a judge and explain the reason for your rejection. Having already been a responsible gun owner weighs heavily in your favor, so I wouldn't worry about being rejected.

If you have 5 or more guns you have to have a safe. They will want to see 2 pictures of the safe, one with the door open and one with it closed, as well as the receipt. Just some more hardship for you to suffer.

That?s about it. It's tideous, but doable. Good luck!

Ny Ny

Donate about a million bucks to the mayor's favorite cause, insuring the mayor gets credit. Then they will grease the wheels for ya.:D :(

Good Luck. I grew up in upstate NY, even had a pistol permit. Left 30 years ago. The only times I have been back have been (sadly) to bury family members, and take their guns out west, where they can live with what's left of our family, in freedom.

Hey Graystar, I see you were a victim of the Ziggy movable price chart at the Pearl River Firing Line here in Rockland. Ziggy is a character.;) :D

kjmbear67,

Use an upstate address in NY State. Register to vote at that address. Pay your taxes from that address. Recieve important mail at that address.

WHY?

You can have several residences. One needs to be primary and it has nothing to do with time spent there. Your city address does not have to be your primary address.

BENEFITS:

1) As your official residence can be in a county that is almost shall issue and
you'll have less hassle keeping your firearms.

2) You'll pay less in taxes as non-city residents don't have to pay the city income tax.

3) You can actually cast your vote for a pro-gun politician as oppossed to throwing your vote away in the city.

Remember that the residence can be that of a friend. How often you stay there is immaterial.

You also might want to do yourself a favor and move to a place like Rockland
County.

Just my .02 cents for what it is worth!

Naw! All you have to do is get a job as a loudmouth Dee Jay on AM radio. Drink a lot, take "Recreational" drugs and beat up your wife/girlfriend or both! The more vulgar/obnoxious/lewd you are the better. Helps to get fined by the FCC.

When you make enough money as a radio "Personality" and have a movie made about your life, you will get a full carry permit with no problem.

You may have to have your Pic taken with NYPD bigs and schmooze wit da mayer. But thats no thang.

LOL! Actually I dealt with Steve, but yeah, Ziggy is quite a character!

They still have a 10/22 of mine on consignment. I might just break down and get a NYC rifle permit for it. Although it miff me to have to buy those darn 5-round mags for it.

wow...

So you're telling me that I cannot possess my pistols in my own home, locked up and unloaded legally?

WHAT THE FU**!!

There is no type of reciprocity with CT and NY?...so the money, time, interviewing, fingerprinting, etc. that I spent less than a year ago from an area 30min outside NYC was a waste...

I HATE DEMOCRATS

Not without a NY handgun license. But with a license you can keep them loaded and in the nightstand ;)

NY doesn't reciprocate with anyone.

ziggy was very friendly and fair in terms of pricing with me-however whatever "finacial" situation he may be in determines what his prices will be-
When was the last time one of you went? I swore there was a tfl member there when I went in march-or maybe his .44 mag shaking me/my 22 also shook me out of my senses:eek: :p
Chase

It's been 3 years since I've been there. It's just way too far for me, and I now go to a yrd range that's just a few minutes away.

But if there's ever going to be a TFL/THR gathering, I'm game! :D

Varmint, I stopped going after an incident at the range several years ago.

I bought my ammo and targets from Steve and proceeded to the line. There was an elderly gent wearing a respirator mask. I politely asked why he was wearing the mask. "I don't want to breath anything in that is dangerous" says he!

Okay fair enough. I think he is over cautious but hey that is his hangup. I set up and Steve comes in and says that if the smoke hangs in the air too long he'll turn up the blowers. "Excuse me", says I. Yeah, it gets cold in here so I don't turn the blowers all the way up. Curious, I wait for the line to go hot and I start firing. Lo and behold smoke is indeed hanging in the air. I start getting a sweet taste in my mouth and realize in a flash why the old gent is wearing the mask. I empty my revolver and quickly pack up. The proprietor asks where I am off to. I reply that my firearm is malfunctioning. I leave and I have never gone back.

As I understand it Steve has left and Ziggy now runs the place, He is not evil but it sure is an unusual place.

PS I never let friends let Ziggy touch their guns.

I'd be up for a local shoot as long as I don't have to go to the Firing Line in Pearl River.
