Moving to California...

Despair

Inactive
Moving to California in January (just over the border from where I live actually), I've checked Calguns and tried to do my research but I'm still confused.

I own two AR15's built on PSA lowers, does simply adding a $20 bullet button and buying some ten rounder mags make them California compliant? Or does the bullet button require a special lower?

Thanks for the help! Moving back out just as quick as I can!

You have crushed my last ray of hope.. I spent 30 minutes on the DOJ website already and I'm no more informed then when I started.. Except perhaps more depressed.. If possible..

As long as your ARs are not by CA law considered "assault weapons", you can move here with no concerns. Just follow the flow chart mentioned at the link below to see if they touch any sensitive spots. Sell your standard capacity mags or block them permanently to 10 rounds before coming. You'll be required to register your guns. All details are at:

http://wiki.calgunsfoundation.org/Moving_to_California_with_firearms

All your handguns are GTG as long as they're not considered "assault weapons" either. Same restrictions on magazines.

Sadly, that is to be expected in CA.

Come join us at Calguns for the few rays of sunshine that there may be.

I shall. If only to mingle my tears with you poor fellows.

Ugh, this is ridiculous. I originally got the AR15s for my wife (:D) because we live in the sticks. But where we are moving in CA is also in the sticks and in a close proximity to where they constantly bust pot farms.. Throw in 10 round mags with a bullet button to top it off and I'm thinking they'd be inadequate if she had to use them. Maybe I should just sell them.

Thanks for the replies :(

What the heck is a bullet button?
An add-on that replaces the standard magazine release. It requires a tool to activate the release, thus avoiding the California restriction on 'detachable magazine' as a 'feature' that might create a rifle into a California 'assault weapon".

The name comes from the California regulation describing 'use of a tool', Title 11 Section 5469
The following definitions apply to terms used in the identification of assault weapons pursuant to Penal Code section 30515:
(a) “Detachable magazine” means any ammunition feeding device that can be removed readily from the firearm with neither disassembly of the firearm action nor use of a tool being required. A bullet or ammunition cartridge is considered a tool. Ammunition feeding device includes any belted or linked ammunition, but does not include clips, en bloc clips, or stripper clips that load cartridges into the magazine.

if my memory serves me, (I moved out of the Imperial Valley in 2006) when you transport in CA you want to make sure the magazines and ammo are locked in the trunk, console or glove box separate from your firearms otherwise it is considered a concealed weapon.

I want to stress separate from your firearms.

I drove a van and when going out to the desert, I kept my ammo in a locked wood box and my magazines in a case by themselves while the firearms were all in cases unloaded.

I never got pulled over but, knew from a bunch of the old timers that this was the way to transport my gear in CA. I still do it that way here in UT.

Where in CA are you moving?

Mel

Thanks Librarian

Thanks for the info Librarian.
My bro who lives in CA is moving out of the state soon as he qualifies for Medicare. Partly because of the gun laws.
It's a liberal state with liberals in control.

Your memory is failing you, I'm afraid.

Please see the wiki article on Transportation -- http://wiki.calgunsfoundation.org/Transporting

Good to know, thanks. I did say where I got my info though and as stated it was not by reading the law itself.

I guess I was over doing it, but you must admit it is a very safe way of doing it.

I do remember being told in a traffic school some 25 years ago in CA that the idea of the laws were that the driver or passenger of the vehicle could not readily load the weapon while moving. Don't know why they would say that though. It was LA county, so....

To the OP, I don't really worry about taking my guns to or from CA except my "assault weapons" do use common sense and be careful.

@Guruatbol,

Your memory is fine, thats what I do when crossing the border too, and thats the general protocol from my experience (I live on the California border).

I'm moving to Del Norte County.

From the new Firearm Safety Certificate study guide for CA:

NEW CALIFORNIA RESIDENT REQUIREMENT

Persons who move to California with the intention of establishing residency
in this state must either report ownership of firearms to the DOJ within 60 days, or sell or transfer the firearm(s) pursuant to California law. (Pen. Code, § 28050.) Persons who want to keep their firearms must submit a New Resident Firearm Ownership Report, along with a $19 fee, to the DOJ. Forms are available at licensed firearms dealers, the Department of Motor Vehicles or on-line at the Bureau of Firearms web site at http://oag.ca.gov/firearms/forms. (Pen. Code, § 27560.)

I do like that area. I tried to promote to Pelican Bay several tines. The plan was to move to Bookings, OR.

I do hope all goes well. Maybe the commute from Bookings would be worth it.

My Grandfather was a lobbyist for NRA in OR.

Brookings is nice, safe area and great fishing :D

Problem is, once you get south of Crescent City you get into "grow" areas. Lots of drug related crime. And thats where I'm moving, which is why I'd like to take my firearms, but it sounds like way to much trouble for a single years move.

Thanks for the help guys!
