Moving firearms from NY to AZ

Just for fun if you're ever in Flagstaff Arizona...

Visit Ruff's Sporting Goods. Very interesting. Great dinner party conversation.

They sell guns, liquor, and porn. Drive thru included :eek:
I was there for a college related alcohol run in the early 90's.
Here's someone's post I happened upon.

Hope you get all your gear here safely!! :)

I also recommend the (outdoor!!) Ben Avery Shooting Facility in the Phoenix area. Stay all day for 5 dollars, and they take safety seriously. Excellent location in the beautiful desert!

The Firearm Owners Protection Act of 1986 allows gun owners to travel interstate with firearms, and any state laws would not apply to them, provided:
-the firearms are not loaded;
-the firearms are secured and inaccessible to the passenger compartment;
-the firearms are legal for you to possess at the start and end of your journey
-if you make a non-emergency stop in any state, that state's laws will apply to you at your own risk.

Just plan your route that if you are going to make any overnight stops, do so in gun friendly states. There is a book you can get called Traveler's Guide to the Firearm Laws of the Fifty States by J. Scott Kappas, that is updated yearly. There you can find plenty of information on FOPA as well as on individual state requirements, and contact information for each state (usually the state's attorney general). It's worth getting.

As far as pistols, if you can't take possession of them in NY, have a NY dealer ship them to a dealer in Arizona. Either have the NY dealer wait until you're in AZ, or have the AZ dealer hold them until you have reached AZ.

If you don't plan on transporting the long guns yourself, I would suggest to use a dealer with them as well; I wouldn't trust a moving company, and I certainly would not want them to know. At least with shipping through a dealer, you can get insurance in case of the unexpected.

Seems like a lot of people are moving to AZ, myself included. I figured I would just pack up my guns in their separate cases, put them up front with my bike and not worry about it. Like someone said, it's doubtful that in the case i DO get pulled over, the cop is going to want to go through everything.

GWBiker: Must one have a local phone number for gun stuff? This day and age, those are starting to become obsolete. I was planning on just keeping my Boston area code cellphone as my primary phone number when down in the 'Zone.

We moved to AZ from CT about 9 years ago. The movers packed the guns in unmarked boxes and they went with the load of household good. They were actually in storage in Tucson for over 4 months. No problems at all - but since then I've aquired quite a few more guns and wouldn't even think of doing that.

Drive them, as detailed by Dewhitewolf. Just make sure to avoid Chicago and get out of NY as fast as possible.

AZ is very gun friendly. You'll like it a lot.

Put your guns and supplies in your car and drive. If you need to, get a small U-haul trailer. If you do not do something to attract attention to yourself, no one will know and once you get this side of St. Louis, no one will care.

Once you get west and south of Illinois, most states are open carry states anyway. Bring I-70 to St. Louis and then take I-44 to Oklahoma city and hammer down.

I cannot imagine asking anyone about transporting firearms. It is assumed to be your American right this side of the big muddy. Kalifornica is the exception to that rule.

Hey, wait a minute -- you're allowed to own guns in Boston Massachusetts?? :eek:

Does Ted Kennedy know about this? :D

Seriously, the Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS) probably will want a local phone number for processing your CCW paperwork. You will have to take an 8 hour gun training course and range qualify with your weapon before one of the local authorized instructors. Guns stores have a list of qualified instructors and their fees.

You can give the AZDPS folks a call and your question about using an out of state phone number on your CCW permit application when you get down here. AZDPS people are very friendly.
