Movies that lift the spirit...

Lift the spirit...hmmmmm...well:

Grease (works every time)
Singing in the Rain
My Fair Lady
Any Elvis movie
Dirty Dancing (okay, I am a sappy girl)

Those are movies that lift my spirit. But for my all time favorite movie, it would have to be a tie between the Olivier version of Shakespeare's "Richard III" and "They Live."

My top picks in this category: "Driving Miss Daisy," "Field of Dreams," and "You Can't Take It With You." :)

Also, perhaps oddly: "Pale Rider," "The Outlaw Josey Wales," "Bronco Billy," and "Honkytonk Man." (OK, I like Eastwood!) ;)

RUDY!!!
Forrest Gump
Braveheart

Then there are the bittersweet - Each of these is guaranteed to pull out my heart, shred it, then put it back in my chest and expect me to live, every single time.

Titanic (it's that damned music!)
Dances with Wolves
SP Ryan
...there are others, but I can't admit certain ones.

For silliness, Dumb and Dumber, Tommy Boy, Raising Arizona, and Planes, Trains, Automobiles have me rolling every time.

I found Independence Day ridiculous when Will Smith and his buddy miraculously figured out how to fly the alien craft, then miraculously figured out their way around the mother ship. Aliens invading earth, I can buy, but alien spacecraft's seats allowed Will to sit comfortably is going to far.

Oh yeah, The Quiet Man. Great flik. Pappillon was one of McQueen's best, along with Tom Horn.

I still can't believe The Matrix Actually lifted anyones spirit.

Uplifting???

in a feel good about life way:

Man From Snowy River
Some Kind of Wonderful
Babe
Clerks
Cinema Paradiso
Hope and Glory

In a "wow the human spirit is amazing" sort of way:

Schindler's List
Saving Private Ryan
Braveheart
Last Temptaion of Christ
At Play in the Fields of the Lord
Life is Beautiful

Dr.Rob

some Monty Python skits from the Brits are hilarious.

Toy Story and Toy Story II are great fun.

and I like musicals. Sound of Music has catchy tunes.

The King and I was fun, but Anna and the King has Chow Yun Fat. Funny. A HongKong Actor protrays a Thai emperor. No wonder the Thailand government refused to allow the filming in Thailand.

yy.

I heard Anna and the King was really bad. However, I do like the original. It is the ONLY musical I have ever enjoyed.

And Futo, that's fairly easy to believe compared to the idea that the aliens use IBM-compatibles that understand that guy's virus program, isn't it? :D
Still, there is one great scene in that movie--when the alien is messing up the President and MR. Loggia (sp?) asks
"Is that glass bulletproof?"
"No, SIR!" Blam blam blam blam blam blam blam. Dead evil alien.

Actually, I thought "GI Jane" was uplifting.

AAACCCKKK! How could this baseball fan forget Field of Dreams?!! I love that movie!

It seems that there are a lot of fans of musicals here...glad to see it. It was tough picking my faves, since there are very few that I don't like.

I'm also glad to see fans of The Man From Snowy River here too. I highly recommend it..the scenery and music are awesome! Of course it has special meaning to me since I happened to be visiting Australia when it was released there and saw it there first...seeing it always brings back happy memories! :D

And I love Monty Python for mindless laughter... ;)

I had also forgotten about The Man From Snowy River - excellent movie. The scene of the young boy riding his horse down the mountain is worth the price of admission alone.

All in all, I like most of the movies that come out of Australia with Mel Gibson (yes, I know he is relatively non-RKBA):

Gallipoli
The Year of Living Dangerously
Road Warrior

And I can't believe I forgot To Kill A Mockingbird. That is one movie that was just about as good as the excellent book.

Cliff,
Wow! Another person also enjoyed the Samurai Trilogy. I loved it, and you also get accustomed to the subtitles.
