Movies that lift the spirit...

Well, as that great patriot and freedom fighter, Pat Summerall, opined during a long past Super Bowl: "This is just unfortunate."

The barbarians are not only at the gate, they are unscrewing the hinges and methodically disassembling the gate fastener by fastener and board by board.

Some allege Bush, Jr. is a few fries short of a happy meal. If McCain were wall board and given a sound rap, would there be a solid stud behind it or just dry rot? The Democrats are beneath mention and contempt. The others are just that - others, and will remain so in this election at least. Meanwhile, Clinton is unwilling to be deterred by such an archaic concept as the legislative branch of the government. Executive fiat is the fuel in his crack pipe.

What else? Hmmm.... the Chinese have many of our military and technology secrets. We fight a war on drugs that we can not possibly win, while un-named (by me) Federal agencies broker drug deals in the interests of 'national security.' Our very sovreignty appears to be negotiable.

And on... And on... And on....

Doesn't it just get to be a bit TOO MUCH?

All vinegar and no honey can make for a very bitter life.

So much for the rant. Here are just a couple of movies that I use as a restorative.

1) SINGIN' IN THE RAIN - My favorite. Marvelous! Gene Kelly, Donald O'Connor and Debbie Reynolds. Singing, Dancing and Comedy all wrapped into one. If you have a DVD player, so much the better. The movie is a feast for the eyes.

2) HOOSIERS - Gene Hackman arrives in Hickory, IN to coach the high school basketball team. The locals don't like him. The team doesn't like him (at first). State championship? No way. So folks would believe.

I have others. Anybody else?

The City of Lost Children,

Ed Wood (oddly inspiring),

The King and I (basically any musical will lift my spirits).

and Terminator 2, just so you don't think I'm fruity :)

Mood lifters?

Anything with the Marx Brothers or the Three Stooges in it.

Just one of the Good Guys

Braveheart ... perhaps odd, but I liked the message of freedom. Too bad the Scottish Nationalist Party has turned out to be a bunch of socialists ...

And, Shawshank Redemption. Quite a triumph of brains and perseverance.

For lifting the spirits from a standpoint of just fun, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels was a stitch, as was Planes, Trains and Automobiles.

I'll get flamed for this cuz the conspiracy folks could say globalism...

But, I really like Independence Day...we kicked ass, we win, we do it with uniquely American style.

Hey, its a movie...waddaya gonna do?

"Quis custodiet ipsos custodes" RKBA!

I like that one too, DC. I've probably seen it 3 or 4 times.

Others that I will watch whenever they are on and make me feel good (some of you are going to say, "you gotta be kidding") - Dr. Zhivago, The Road Warrior, Star Trek - The Voyage Home, and Time Bandits (my son and I have watched that one at least 10 times, we always find something new.) And like Mercator, I like almost all good musicals, especially any by L & L and R & H.

Movies that lift the spirit, huh? Well, lessee....

It's a Wonderful Life,
Going My Way,
Field of Dreams,
The Wizard of OZ,
Casablanca,
A Christmas Carol,
Old Yeller,
Spencer's Mountain,
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington,
Harvey,
On Golden Pond,
Pretty Woman,
An Officer and a Gentleman,
Greystoke, the legend of Tarzan

And many more whose titles escape me at the moment...

And you know what? With the exception of Casablanca, not a SINGLE gun (or gunshot), car chase, or explosion in the bunch. Hmmmm.....

First on my list is "Tremors": the gunnut saves the day!!

Second would be "Grosse Point Blank": for, well, rather personal reasons...mainly for hoping for my very own happy ending...

Paint Your Wagon - just about my all time favorite

Tremors is a good 'un

Every Which Way but Loose - utter silliness :D

Patton

The Outlaw Josey Wales

Smokey and the Bandit more silliness and a guilty pleasure :)

NWGunman, I just want to take this opportunity to take back any disagreements we may have had over the years, on the off chance that you mean you're actually a hit man.

And guys, are we still talking about movies that uplift the human spirit? Tremors? Paint Your Wagon?
:D

Maybe I missed the point. I agreed w/Tremors because I enjoyed it and the "gun nuts" were heroes. Could of missed the mark.

As far as Paint Your Wagon, I fail to see how this movie could not uplift your spirits unless you just don't like it. Any movie that makes me laugh that hard, repeatedly, always leaves me in good spirits. Unless you are talking about uplifting your spirits RKBA wise? Then I don't understand the problem w/ Tremors. Y'all got me confused now.
