motorcycle conceal question

I ride a harley and find IWB a bit uncomfortable on long rides.

Living in Florida, the season of jacket wearing is short and I am considering a side holster for my J frame Smith.

I am concerned about wind, etc if I wear a shirt over my t-shirt and would love some advice.

On my Sportster, I bolted on a neat little tool box that sort of looks like an oil tank.
That's where I keep my pistol when I ride, and when I park, I just slip it out and into my IWB holster.

Simple 'nuff, and I don't have to worry about the wind exposing my piece on the road.

Foxcreek leather vest for me when on the bike. they have a leather lined gun pocket on all their vests. my 442 or ultracarry fit in there perfectly........

I bought a little fanny pack with magnets that mount it on the tank right in front of me----handy for change and odds and ends u might need on highway.

At stops you can hook it on your belt.

It is made by DaytonaGear. I just looked at it and found the E1 I have been tearing house--car---locker up looking for. :D

Wow!!!! I am really impressed! Five posts and none screeming the dangers of carrying a gun on a ;)motorcycle!
If im riding a chopper i always have the gun in a satchel across the gas tank or handlebars, this way i can get at it quick without the discomfort, there are some pretty darn nice leather vests with inlaid holsters as well.

floyd, the tool box CDH is referring to can usually be bought in chrome or black and depending on the bike you ride you can get the Harley part# through your dealer. At anyrate this year I`ll carry a S&W 442 in a handlebar pouch attached to the inside of the fairing under radio. Touring models seem to have better hiding spots for cc.

Since riding a motorcycle requires both hands and feet, I carry in my tank or tail bag.

Some acquaintances carry in fanny packs positioned on the small of the back.

Since Texas does not require a helmet on adults while riding a motorcycle, the last thing a helmet-less rider has to worry about is a gun on his hip.

Motorcycle conceal, oh, that's easy!

You could do like I do... fire up bike, ride to Aunt's house in the North 'burbs, remove gun from safe. Place gun in case, lock case, place locked case in saddlebag, lock saddlebag. Drive to range, shoot... (Note: if shooting at range in South 'burbs or Indiana, ride far enough west to avoid any chance of entering Chicago city limits). Tada! That's how you do it.... oh wait, my bad.
You are talking about living someplace where it's not only legal for you to carry if you have a permit but ALSO be able to keep a handgun AT your home, nevermind. :(

I would always wear a cut with a pocket inside where I would stuff whatever I was carrying. Or a leather jacket - same inside pocket...

nice! Did you fabricate that box or is it something you bought?

It's actually a sort of clam shell tool box that was standard equipment on some other type of motorcycle.
I honestly can't remember what, though.
A very long time ago, I knew someone who was part owner of a motorcycle salvage yard. During the time that I was customizing my '70 XLCH (and modded it by adding all the electric start goodies from an XLH so I could both kick and button start it ;) ), he let me look through all sorts of stuff, and this one neat looking tool box caught my eye.
But it was in a pile on a table so I had no idea where it came from. All I know is that it came from some other make of bike, I think, an English bike of some flavor.

Unrelated but interesting... I knew the guy because I had a Corvette body shop and he wanted a paint job for his '71 Coupe. So in the end, we traded even up; he got his (show quality custom) paint job, and I got an all original, full dress, '78 "Anniversary" FLH (this was sometime around 1980 or so).
I sold it a few years later and still kick myself for doing so.
I kept the Sportster for sentimental reasons because I had bought it brand new in late '69.

Back to subject... I can't even remotely imagine having to draw and fire while actually riding. If I'm on a fast bike, I'm going to put some distance between myself and any threat.
So keeping a pistol secure and hidden on the bike but where easily and quickly accessable the moment I lower the kickstand is about as good as it can get for serious self defense in that situation.

Another thing I've done over the years is to get one of those smaller military, olive green, surplus rucksacks, and strap it to the handlebars so that the bag itself sits securely on the handlebar clamps.
While I prefer to carry the pistol in the toolbox, that rucksack would also be a good option for carrying on a bike.

I ride and carry regularly. I once carried an AMT backup in a holster clipped to the top inside of my boot. That worked well. I finally sold the backup, I regret the decision of course, so now it is usually a fanny pack in the summer and a Bianchi X15 in the winter. I don't like fanny packs in general, but they work well for the bike. I could say something about needing to carry a lot of tools and parts for those who ride Harley's but I will leave that alone.:)

I carry when I ride.

I ride a sport bike and nearly always wear a mesh jacket. I carry in one of three places depending on the ride. Fanny pack strapped higher up, like mid torso so that the jacket will cover it completely. Tank bag, I have a pretty minimal Joe Rocket tankbag that I attach between me and the tank. It keeps me a little farther back in the saddle too. Third option is a IWB holster velcrowed (is that a word) between the windshield and the, um, dash for want of a better term. I have a touring windscreen on the bike and have a fair amount of space between the dark smoke plex and the fiber board below it. With the off-body options, I also have a OWB holster that I transfer to when I get off the bike that I can cover with whatever I'm wearing.

Don't forget to actually practice drawing your firearm from your chosen hide. You don't know what can go wrong until you try. But do it in the garage. I did try a couple other options and found that while I can produce the firearm, I had a very difficult time reholstering until I could use both hands. The back of a bike can be a very awkward position.

A word of warning to anyone reading this thread. Small of the Back carry can be extremely dangerous. If you go down, you could inflict serious spinal damage on yourself if you land on your firearm.

I hope someone will open a thread on CC on a bicycle.

Great info, thanks!

I have a bag attached to the forks, but worry about transferring to IWB in view of a lot of peopleas well as getting to it fast enough as the bag has buckle straps.

No helmet laws in Florida, so the risk of falling on my revolver on my hip takes a back seat to other factors.

floyd, in case you`re interested in the toolbox I looked in JP Cycles 2008 catalogue, page 759. www.JPCycles.com. They sell 'em mounts and all. Used to have one on a Fatboy. I velcro`ed holster to back inside of box , front unlocks and flips down. Didn`t want bags on bike. Box is tear drop shaped(holster/gunfits perfect) and on some models can be purchased for left or right hand mount. Price is about $130 for box and mount. Goodluck! P.S. Check them out and if you want to put one on bike PM me and I'll go through my junk to see what I`ve got.

I carry a 642 or a Bulgy Mak in the inside pocket of the old stand-by----Cut off Levi jacket. This has worked for years for me. There is usually another Mak in the left saddlebag also.

thanks to all!

shortwave, the box looks good. I am stubborn and refuse to put bags or windshields on my Fatboy

CCW on the Bike

Picture426.jpg

When I ride I'm just the opposite, I want My windshield and bags, but My CCW is still where I always wear it IWB 3:30 . I am a member of the " Over the Bars " club. Got hit in the twisties up in Pa by a rock the size of My thumb right in the glasses, Head snapped right, bike went right caught a Guide wire for a pole, pole stopped bike, not Me ! Rode the bike Home 75 miles after I awoke from down the bank LOL LOL ! and a Honda Passport tried to breed with My VTX1300 while I was still on it ( hence the H-D now ) so I've had unwelcome contact with the pavement . Dick special .38 in the pocket of My jeans both times , compared to all the other breaks & bruises, I don't think My side was touched at all........WVleo
