Most reliable and accurate "assault rifle" in .308?

Here we go again... There really is no best, do it all, it does everything and is cheap too rifle.

M1As are very accurate, but the mags are $bucks$
FALs have cheap mags but will never be as out of the box accurate as M1As, some dressings help though.
AR10s have even more expensive mags than M1As.
HKs are cool too.
Galils are not cheap!
All are reliable battle rifles.

Keith, do you really have that Izzy Short HB or are you just teasing... if so, stop it!

Did someone say AR?

Here's my 1/4MOA AR15 SSSB.

This is one HEAVY pup, too.

Rex,
Yep.. I do... :)

If you care to see some of my other toys, I got em here:

I'm currently working on an MSG90A1 clone as well!

Hey Keith,

Is that a DPMS (at least the Hi-Rider Upper)? I got an Extreme on order. I'm not familiar with that scope you have on top, looks Russian.

Wwwell doggone! Looks like you're in the right place, and we're glad to have ya. Nice hardware.
By the way, did you do that Izzy conversion yourself or send it out somewhere. Looks very class! Plus, compliments on the light wood.

If the M1As are so accurate why are the ARs whooping them in highpower competitions? Now that I think about it, I haven't seen an M1A shoot a 200 in the Slow Prone in years but the ARs do it often (shot some 199s myself). Realistically, though, whether a battle rifle shoots 1/2 min. or 2 min. it wouldn't make a difference to the average shooter. At 200 yds. a 2 min. rifle will still be plenty effective. At 600 yds. the shooters ability to judge distance, read wind, read mirage, and lead for movement are more critical than an extra min. of accuracy. A local club holds some 600 yd. F Class matches (bipods, scopes, rests from the prone position) and I see lots of inexperienced shooters strutting around with expensive "1/2 inch" and "1/4 inch" guns only to find they can't keep them on the paper when they have to negotiate the challenges long range shooting presents.
Back to your question for $500 and some patience a CETME is hard to beat. Mine shoots 2 in., 5 shot groups or better with anything I've thrown in it. The crap shoot is a lot of guys, myself included, find the sight alignment to be out of kiltter. With the sights adjusted all the way over mine puts hits on the left edge of the front sight. Been seriously thinking about milling the rear sight off and replacing it with an AR rear sight assembly with the elevation post removed. That way I would have elevation adjustment on the front and windage on the rear sight.
The FALs would also seem to be a good choice but I'm not experienced with them enough to give a recommendation.

hksigwalther,
You've got a good eye. That is surely DPMS' "match" upper. Very rigid and Very class. All components (except for the Oly lower) are DPMS' best stock. The scope is a (hehe) LEAPERS (I know :))! IT's a 10-24 X56. Cheap... but holds a zero OK.

A.Rex,
I did the Izzy myself (actually RE-did it from another build).
I've got the story of it on my website. If I don't a build a gun myself, I usually, at least, wind up taking it apart and putting it back together "right". I Never seem to be satisfied with anything as it comes out of the box. Always wind up getting in there and "fixin" somethin.

Thanx for all the kind words guys.

Keith, too bad you're not in Florida... You've got a fun hobby!

Leafy, come on... The question specifically stated .308, not 5.56~ and I think I could use your same response for any of the battle rifles- for instance, if your CETME is so accurate, how come the AR15 is dominating it in high-power matches?
I also remember stating "out of the box". Now if your CETME shoots as good as my M1A out of the box (no tinkering) I'll buy you a candybar. I'm not saying you vs. me, I'm saying to the same shooter, both guns. Hathcock could outshoot us both, and probably many AR-15 guys as well.

Herr Walther,

My dad can beat up your dad. :D
Hell I don't think I can shoot 1/2 MOA with any rifle.

A.Rex,

Ain't nothin' cheap about a PSG1, unless 10K is chump change to you. :D

Uh, are we talking HK Oberndorfer PSG1s here, or KIT guns assembled from Spanish surplus...
What is with you guys today?

If you're trying to get me to say M1As are sheisse... go ask Clint Fowler, McKee, Mike Gingher and Gus Fisher.

Given your requirements ("battle carbine", 1.5MOA accuracy, under $1500, .308 and proven reliability), I'd say the M1A Scout rifle is the way to go. The only other gun out there that would meet your requirements would be a custom-made FAL carbine with some DSA lightweight parts. Good luck getting "head shot" sized groups out of ANY rifle with military sights in a carbine radius though.

Brian Busch - a fal built in carbine state does not effect the sight radius. The front sight is on the gas block. Unless you go so short that you mess with the gas system (into NFA territory), you will have the same sight radius as a stock, 21" barreled L1A1 or STG58

Best "Battle Rifle" in 7.62x51

I cannot understand why people are so down on the AR-10. It is by far the most accurate .308 rifle I own. It has never failed. NOT EVEN ONCE! I also have FAL's and AR-15's. I also like them as well. However, I can just pick up the AR-10, aim and shoot. If I were in a TSHTF situation and could only take one rifle the AR-10 would be the one. Get one, you won't be disappointed.

Just my two cents.

Benjamin-

The lightweight DSA Carbine has a significantly shorter sight radius. The gas system is cut down. If I was going to build a lightweight kit FAL, I'd do it with the alloy Williams upper, DSA alloy lower and the short gas system. It would come in at about 6lbs.
